I always have fond memories of Derby. I must've done 35 trips since '86 to Alton Towers and coming off Junction 23a of the M1, before that bypass was built that means you can do the journey in less than 2 hours {admittedly, with your foot going through the floor}, I'd always head to Derby and pass through it. So on the way, Derby meant we were close to rides, rides and more rides and on the way back, Derby meant we were near the Motorway and "full speed ahead closer to home".

i feel the same way about Winchester; driving back to see my folks in Bournemouth i know that when i get to Winchester i'm back onto roads that i knew as a kid and coming back to derby, winchester is the point where i think "woooh, motorway ho!"

Someday I think that I may retire and my bride wants to retire in Iceland!.!
I've been trying to convince her that OZ would be a much better place to spend our sunset years.

I like a bit of anonymity, so the general area (NW USA) is all I'll commit too. Of course, if you follow my posts at all, eventually you'll figure it out. But it does help to put something, so we know if you're talking about 120/60hz mains or 220/50hz mains, Canadian/US/Hong Kong/Australian/Singapore dollars, etc.

I had a lovely sea food lunch in Fremantle when I visited Perth a few years back--very pleasant and slightly Bohemian sort of place.

Glad you enjoyed your stay, I was laughing as you said when I visited Perth I had lunch in Fremantle, Freo is very Parochial of its location. We never say we are from Perth always Fremantle LOL. They held the world sailing championship a while back and the state government put up a big sign on the coast "PERTH" well that got the freo people wound up, it was lucky it was not burned down.

Bohemian is properly a good description, it has a great coffee culture due to the arrival of Italian migrants in the 1950's to 1960's and people just like to chill out sipping coffee watching the world go by. Don't get me started about our football team (Aussie Rules) LOL, where in Qld are you from?

Cheers
Alan.

Well, if I'm truthful, I'm "from" the West coast of Canada, via 30ish years living in the UK and now (for the past five years) retired to Toowoomba which is about 100km straight west of Brisbane, perched on an 800 metre plateau atop the range.

I should have been more clear about my visit to Fremantle--some years back, I had a business trip to Perth which I combined with a few extra days there visiting an inlaw. On one of our excursions, we hopped on the train, left Perth and did a day trip to Fremantle which I enjoyed very much!
