I like the 100 watts at 8 though. That just rips. But ofcourse i know the advantage of headroom, it's just that i personally haven't heard a marshall that sounds as good at 1 as it does at 7. The DSL has a minimum of 3, although higher is definately better IMHO.
My 30th Anniv. sounds best at 5 and above. But at 5, with my cab, I could knock everyone down on the front row it's that loud :D

I should cut the watts to 50 sometime and run the throttle up to 8 and see how it sounds. Never tried that before.

Anyone use attenuators to cut the volume down? Why hasn't anyone mentioned that as an option - is it because nobody has tried it, or is there a reason to avoid that?

I personnaly haven't found one that I like. Didn't try that many. soo. The powerbrake sucks . just plain sucks. My am,p tech lauighe and told me he would build m one but it woudl cost as much as a marshall... LOL

(and yes, the marshall at 5 will knock people down, and NO 50 watts aint gonna be much quieter. )

For what I play I prefer smaller amps pushed a bit. If I need cleaner, I turn down and bump it up in the PA.

If you have the dough, Billy Gibbons from ZZTop used this Demeter isolation box for a long time. It has an 80 watt Celestion and a mic mount in it.

:) I built a power brake with three 50W 8ohm power resistors a bunch of years ago. It worked, but not well. Sounded quite bad.

Yup. Half the power = -3db SPL only. The main differences in sound come from headroom or lack of it.

Everything else being equal, if you have a guitar amp that puts out 90 db at 1 watt/1 meter,

2W= 93 db
4W= 96 db
10W= 100 db
100W= 110 db

Cutting the power to 50W drops you to 107 db, which is a barely noticeable volume drop.

rufio uses mesa... =P BUT the singer sounds like he hasnt hit puberty yet, very clean tone tho

complicated question my friend. in a nut shell yes. the single will sound real close to the triple but there are many things to consider. how many speakers are you pushing (4x12 or 2x12 or maby 1x12) whats the wattage on the amp. pick ups , strings, guitar. they all make notable changes to your tone. any amp will sound different at louder volumes. whats your favorite tone from your favorite band/album. research what they used to record/play live. you just have to dig a little bit but the info is out there. for me I wanted the lamb of god tone. I got a triple rect and found it was a bit floppy in the low range and not enough sustain on single notes. couldn't get a real tight metal tone out of the box. did some research and got a tube screamer and used and cab with vintage 30's. spent some time tweeking and holy #$%! I nailed it. I am lamb of god now. sound just like there tone. marshall or mesa both great amps. IMHO mesa will give you more options tone wise. every little tweek will go a long way but takes some time to dial it in. I think marshalls are more user friendly but have less tonal range. the single dual or triple all have the same mesa sound but more wattage of the amp will give you more headroom on your eq settings. if your concerned about being to loud to get your tone research iso cabs. I record in my garage about 20 ft from my neighbors bedroom window with a 4x12 mesa cab and I can get great sound out of the triple without any complaints. I use a tube screamer and a compressor and mic the cab into protools. I am very pleased with my mesa.

even if you get the 150watt triple you can remove 2 of the tubes to cut it down to half the wattage. then you can push the head at a lower volume.

Great advice!
I hope he lets us know what he decides... :)
