I got my first Laney back in the early 90's. I went to a place called "Building 19" their slogan was "We sell good stuff cheap". Apparently they bought out a music store because they had a random bunch of musical stuff on a big table. Buried under some keyboards was a brand new GH50L. I asked how much and the lady said "$200". I grabbed it without thinking and as I was writing a check she said "What is that thing anyways?". I have been a Laney fan ever since (And Marshall).

I found a '79 marshall 2150 combo (thats a pre plexi amp I think). I bought in the late eighties for $150. I played through it for a couple of years then it got pushed to the back to pile. This was my first tube amp. 10 years later I dug it out and rediscovered this jem again. Now its my prize amp!

Here are all my current Laneys.

Plexis are from the mid to late 1960's, I have 2 reissue Plexis, 1959HW and 1987X. There is nothing like your first tube amp. Mine was a small Univox combo.

I've got a Laney S.S. amp I got for small jazz gigs. It's a ...... a .... 'Tube Fusion' is their term for their supposedly tube sounding solid state. It's a 30 watt amp.

It really sounded very very good until it blew up around the 6th gig I did with it.
I was really sorry it died and no one has been able to fix it.
I use it just for the speaker right now but I really wish I could get it fixed as I have a genuine use for a small light amp and it did sound good.

Anyway ..... that's my only Laney.

I forgot to mention I have a small solid state Laney in my shop I use for set ups and testing. I dont have to wait for tubes to warm up. I must say it really screams, its distortion channel doesnt sound bad, it has some "Tube Emulation" circuit in it. It is an LV-100.

I bet it does sound good.
Like I said .... the one I have sounded great.
I'm not a solid state hater as I have had a few S.S. amps that were great amps.

I wish someone could fix this one ............. I'd use it a lot.

Have you looked for a Laney service center locally?

I have used Laney for my bass since before even getting my own. Coincidentally, or perhaps subconsciously. I used some Laney keyboard amp back in high school that I used to practise on. =P Once I actually got my own gear and started practising at home, I got myself an RB-3 practise amp. Since becoming a more serious hobby, I put some cash down for a proper gig-able amp. For the head, I actually went for a Gallien-Krueger. The Laney Nexus heads look great too, but 1] not enough cash for one, but 2] I really fell in love with the sound of my GK. But what I did do was pair it with a couple of the Nexus cabs. The cabs sound great. They surprisingly fit really well with the GK head. It's a shame I can't use the bi-amp feature of the head with them, but as with the Nexus head, the matching GK cabs were just too much over budget. At some point, I'd love a full stack of Laney Nexus/Gallien Krueger each, side by side.

EDIT:

Here's a picture of the full stack. I actually use one cab in the studio and the other as a gigging cab though.

I never really dug the Laney sound, tbh. I know they were big in the late '80s metal scene with a lot of players I knew.

They can do alot more than just metal, sure the amps made in the 80's have that certain "High Gain Squished" sound, but todays Laneys are much different, they have a lot of diverse models. The Lionhearts are "Retro" sounding, almost "Plexi" like, but quite unique also.

I need those cabs to go with my NEXUS head.

I don't doubt you, but there are many good amps out there today. I found a couple of models, (and that is what's important to me, models of brands and not just brands) that I like so I'm good. I don't mean to sound complacent, but in the tone category I guess I am. I've found what works for me and have little interest otherwise except for learning how to make better music and playing from them.

Well worth the price. Which is surprisingly little. £440 each when I got mine. About $700? The GKs I wanted were £720 each. =P But definitely a great sound from the Laneys. I use them with the tweeters off, or half on if I fancy a little bit more zing. Paired up with the GK, both give me some powerful mid punchiness, whilst still being able to handle a good enough amount of low end.
