I'm kind of bummed, and here's why.

I But in the heat of the moment, when folks are discussing something, it's OK for people to be a bit more candid with their feelings, and in my own mod status here, I've never given out any infractions or bans for that kind of stuff....even when it was aimed directly at me.
in all fairness I must admit that's true.

You and I have disagreed strongly a few times and you have yet to take any sort of 'mod' action over it.

I don't know ... The moderated thing would probably be better for a sub-forum such as this. Imagine this forum being archived as a database of information ... then imagine the crap someone would have to sift-through to organize such a database. That 'analog air' thread derailed not only into an analog vs. digital debate, but ultimately into a 'which kind of sauerkraut should I use on my sausage?' conversation.
A fair point but not everyone likes for a forum to simply be a listing of facts and figures.

Personally I prefer for the threads to be more conversational and go where they will.

I know you don't agree with that and I do see your point ....... I'm not denigrating your view at all ..... it's a valid one.

I just don't share it.

Thank you. The was a very welcome comment.

You know...I think sometimes we disagree even when we are agreeing! :D
I really do think it's a communication problem of the typed word on a computer screen.
Honestly dude, I always considered you a solid source of audio/music info, and you have plenty of cred in my book even though you've thought on some occasions that I was being snooty to you.
I also know you really are a music pro when it comes to performing, more so than many of us who just record in a studio.
Live gigs are not an easy road.....

I LOVE the conversation, the banter and prattling too even (especially?) when it's inane and stupid and fun or just pleasant, but no more of this boorish, 'bad citizen' crap inciting people to start fights.

Remember, if you win a fight on the Internet, NOBODY CARES. Hahahahah. It's so true and I know I'm guilty of that one here and there, but folks, c'mon. Don't be a turd. Don't be a bully. Let us talk about our stupid tape machines and our stupid analog preferences and leave us alone? That's all I'm saying :)

I want to say to EVERYone who read my complaint or chimed in, THANK YOU. I was honestly pretty disappointed and was considering just forgetting this site entirely.

The Analog Only forum is the only section of this site that I read and I'm glad that everyone here wants to make it a better place.

Gracias x10,
Jeffrey

For the record, no one ever notices the Tascam forum :D

I asked Chater to merge them a few years back--I recall that idea had support here--but she said it was too hard

nah, we won't let it go so easily ... this is the only analog forum online that I'm aware of.

See, that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about! This is a small enough forum that I think we can all agree to not be d-cks to each other!!! :) :)

Sometimes i post smartass comments in other forums here, like answering "mic recommendations under $1000." (literally, and ignoring that could be at least four different currencies.....) maybe that is mean, but sometimes you just have to do that....

But I actually tried inadvertantly to basically hijack the 100% analog thread and ask how people are doing an all analog recording, from tracking --- mixing --- and especially including DIY mastering. It is *easier* to dump the stereo mix to a computer and do a half assed normalization, song ordering, consistent EQ. I'd still like suggestions on how people are doing that exclusively on tape, and if there is anything easier then mixing to two track, getting the mix right and then splicing a master tape together.

No one picked up that and question was apparentlyh lost in the flames & rantathon.

I'm getting more and more toward doing all the editing, EQ, etc. ... I think the end medium should be considered as well. all of the CDs I've released have no digital EQ or processing at all. I've done this a couple different ways. One way is to simply get your EQ and compression right while you are mixing, another way is to do it while you are transferring the final mix to the CD burner (or computer, etc.).

The most recent song I finished was done 100% analog (ironically, it is slated for a digital-download compilation!). I spliced the tape (there are three sections) and did the EQ, compression and fades during the mix. Then I just transferred the mix to a CD burner. The only thing I did in the computer (Audacity) is cut the extra silence and tape clicks from the beginning and end of the track. If this were to be pressed to vinyl, I would splice in some leader tape at the beginning and end and send it off.

Back in my 4-track cassette days as a teenager in the late '90s (I had no computer), I would mix to cassette and level and EQ match as I went along. If a song was too loud or too soft, I would mix it over again until I got it right! I remember mixing an entire album in one evening too! And to this day, it still sounds pretty decent and consistent.

level-matching is less precise in the all-analog realm and should ideally probably be handled at the mix stage and by the mastering guy who's cutting the record.

all-analog is very expensive -- a big problem for the DIY-ers. At this point, If I were to release an all-analog vinyl LP, I would try to get as close as possible to the final sound while mixing, get the fades pretty close, splice the thing together. then send it off to the mastering engineer and have him fine-tune it with while he cut it. You'd want to listen carefully and send him fairly detailed notes. He would also need to listen through a bit and make his own notes prior to the cut.

Yeh, you could make another, mastered tape copy -- this is probably better if it's a really big release. But not really as practical for DIY.

Here's a video that provides some insight and shows some of the options available (most important part starts around 5:50):

I just joined the forum (I found it after searching for a replacement for the Tascam forum). People will troll around looking for places to argue their point. One of the few places I find no tolls are online obituaries and accident reports in online newspapers. In that vein, and to bring this back to the analog only topic, my best friend died a year and a half ago. He left me with all of his digital and analog recordings. I am a drummer, he was a guitarist. My favorite recording is an analog recording of him and I messing around with congas and guitars, playing old songs and laughing. Priceless. Perhaps when faced with NO OTHER OPTIONS, people are content to enjoy without argumentation. Just a thought.

Watched the video. The good stuff comes after the credits for sure. !

Hey, I would like to politely suggest that this thread be closed to new posts, just 'cause I feel like we've addressed everything we need to here.

Just my opinion. I kinda just don't want this thread to keep floating around since I think I got my point across well enough :)

As the author, are you able to close your own thread here?
