"The rest of the stuff you're talking about, I haven't seen in years because I set it up properly and maintain it."

I think that's the point, if you are into computers then you will "set it up properly and maintain it" but if you just want to turn it on and work Mac's are simpler. Not better, just simpler.

Long story short - PC's are great for computer guys, awful for those of us who are technotarded.
Completely agree.

I would disagree. If that were true, every one would own a mac. The fact is that 90 percent of the population own a windows computer. Apple took over the mp3 market with Itunes and Ipod, they decimated the competition even though their price was higher they still have the lions share of the market.

Mac has been around since 1984 and they still only own a very small share of the computer market.

They are both tools. They both do the same thing and run for the most part the same programs. The PC costs less which is why they can be found in Walmart, walmart shoppers how ever uneducated will buy one and use a windows machine, and is easy enough, reliable enough and intuitive enough that even old people can learn to use them and make them work well. It only takes getting caught by a virus once to learn you must make backups. I am not saying only the stupidest, slowest, learning impaired people buy Macs. I am saying those same people can buy a pc and do just as well.

People talk about the mac community. Well when someone gets a virus, there is a huge community of people on the web, people in meetup.com groups, people at work, friends of friend who all can fix your windows computer. I have met more people in my community fixing computer problems. Now that's a real community. Maybe I could start a fix your computer for sex website. It is barter system so gov can't get taxes thus probably could not be considered prostitution. The only problem with that according to the poster above, only smart, highly intelligent women use pc and only "technotarded" use mac. Perhaps that is a good reason to learn mac as the dumb ones are probably easier to convice sex for computer repair is a good thing. :D:laughings:

I don't get why anyone would use a Mac.

When you're recording and working within your DAW app, it doesn't make a jot of difference what your OS is. Providing it is fast, stable, unintrusive, runs your stuff and does so without problem, it doesn't matter what OS you have. Likewise, providing your computer performs quickly and has no crash-inducing defects, it doesn't matter who made it. It's all just there to host your DAW app and hardware.

So, it doesn't matter whether you use Mac or PC. Both do the same job equally as well as the other.

But, Apple's mark-up on their goods is very high. This means that for the same money as a Mac Book Pro with an i5 dual core and a mechanical harddrive, you can buy a Dell with an i7 Quad Core and an SSD. Seems pretty pointless to buy the system with less than half the CPU power.

I'm not saying that computer n00bz can't use windows, it's just that they seem to be better suited to Macs. Windows requires more maintenance due to the threat of malicious software and viruses. Macs are rarely affected by them. I won't say that Macs "just work" like most idiot mac users do (implying that Windows doesn't), because they fuck up a lot, as expected IME. But for people who don't know too much about computers, it would be more suited to them.

Disclaimer: I'm not saying anything bad about people with few computer skills :)

Why do women buy designer handbags that hold less stuff but cost 20 times more? Mac Book Pros are more of a "stylish" accessory these days than a computer. Apple know this, and that's why they charge so much. People will pay.

I don't get Apple. My feelings about Apple, and the mac mob aside, if Apple priced their computers reasonably, they would be making a huge impact on the computer industry right now.

So I was at this gig tonight and casually mentioned (or maybe a shameless attempt to drum up some business) to the bass player that I did live recording. The first question out of his mouth was..........................

"Are you Mac or PC?"
Maybe he was just making conversation....

Could've been. I'd ask the same question, but my tone would probably reflect that it's just for conversation.

Dastrick, what way did he say it?

Most people have trouble with Wintel PCs not because they don't maintain them, but because they treat them like trash, load them with garbage and naver take the trash out, and because they hang around places like file sharing sites and Russian **** sites. I've owned quite a few Wintel PCs, put very little "set up and maintenance" into them and never had 1/10th the problems that everybody always talks about.

it doesn't require care and maintenance, it only requires not being stupid with it.

I have to agree. In the past, I use to use norton goback instead of antivirus. It seemed to use a lot less resources. Then when macrium free backup solution which backs up the whole drive came a long. I quit using antivirus log ago. I use web scanners or other not real time scanners and scan the drive occasionally but I don't go to places I shouldn't. If I download shareware, I use a web scanner like housecall to scan the file. I have only had to go back once since I started using computers, that was because I let a nephew on my system and did not monitor him.

If you backup regularly you can always go back and it saves time. I agree, if you have half a brain, a little money for a big external (or 2nd internal) hard drive, if you back up life is good and you can buy that cheap windows system and spend the savings on music or your other hobbies. When Mac produces a reasonable priced computer that you can actually add a couple hard drives to (mac people talk about how good macs are made but the reason you cannot use a couple internal hard drives is that the power supply would have to increase in size, heat and most important cost) I would get one. Until then, they will remain at 10 percent market share.

Barter transactions are taxable under US law, as are illegal transactions . . .

I am thinking that maybe I could claim the work as a loss and deduct it from my taxes then.

Nope, you have no basis in your own labor. Bartering services is fully taxable for each party ;)

In your link they refer to two companies, not two individuals. In the case of the company exchanging cleaning for computers, that company enjoys a tax deduction for the wages they pay their employees, not the foregone value of the cleaning services provided. Thus, the tax implications are exactly the same as if they had provided the service for cash and then purchased the computers for the same amount.

I use macs for one purpose only; running my DAWs. I use PCs for everything else.

I don't get why anyone would use a Mac...

I've spent over 10 years on Mac, less that 10 min on Windows. My Mac was given to me for free. I have 6 Macs that work and several for parts, plus I can do any repair a Mac needs and know nothing about PC's.

When I got Cubase (my main app) the Cubase versions available on PC's were garbage compared. In 1999 you would have been crazy to pick the PC version.

I would think that most people would get why a person like me would use a Mac. A lot of it is growing into it. If I had to start from scratch today I don't know if I would choose Mac because they are way overpriced and I've never liked the way they treated the people that keep them in business. I think Steve Jobs is nuts, kind of like a country with an insane dictator. He won't be around for that much longer and I expect the company will drastically change then.

OS X is an ill conceived, dumbed down OS to me, OS 9 was actually better, required less keystrokes to do things and was more well thought out, but unstable as hell.

Computers in 2010 are where car brakes were in 1925 - they all suck.

I can't speak for anyone else but I use my Mac the same way I used my PC's (never downloading anything even remotely suspicious, or visiting Russian **** sites) and my PC's gave me endless issue.

My techy friends always fixed it without a problem but I haven't had to call them since I got my Mac. If that isn't simpler I don't know what is.

That sums it up nicely; choosing between Apple and the rest of the world is choosing between a rock and a hard place.

I forget where I read this, but someone said somewhere that personal computers are in the chrome and tail fin era. I think that's pretty close to it.
If that isn't simpler I don't know what is.
Well, it's no simpler than having a PC and never having to call a techie, which has been my experience with non-Apple PCs of every kind since my first Altair 8800b back in the late 70s.

Most Wintel PC problems stem from one of three sources (sometimes combined): MS Word, PC games, and being an Internet whore. Reboot after using Word, save the fancy games for your XBox or Wii, and stay away from being a file whore on the Net, and 99% of your problems will disappear.

G.

I did have MS Word but I never play PC games, and I'm no "internet whore".

I'm not saying many people haven't had a great experience using PC's, I'm just not one of them.

Things seemed to randomly change (my personal favourite being actually eliminating notes in Finale and replacing them with rests) all the time and I felt ignorant and helpless to do anything. Two years in and my Mac hasn't done anything like this.

But to go back to the original post, it doesn't matter what you use, I think we can all agree on that.

Well I would disagree here for one reason. Without my windows system, I could not talk to you on this forum. I could not download cool free vsts, I could not send email and catch up with friends on facebook. I could not download music without paying the man for a whole $20 cd. I watch moveis and reruns and see specials of upcoming stuff. Without youtube and the amount of information how to fix things half my stuff, cars, electronics, house stuff would be broke.

The most important thing is 30 years ago, I would spend a fortune for a new DAW, and the cheap ones say and Ensoniq EPS or VFX were a couple thousand dollars and very limited.

Today with a computer, I can get a great vst for 200 bucks or a DAW software free to 300 bucks, I would have had to buy compressors for each channel in the old days and dedicated hardware that was 3k. If I build my own computer like I did I had a I5 quad core with SSD and all my software for under 3k. Including compressor and mastering software, sound card and everything.

I love computers they are the best thing since sliced bread, I don't care if it is an over priced mac or a cheap unrealiable PC, it is available to everyone and I would prefer it to car brakes of 1925 or 2010. It is simply an indispensible tool that is a commodity available to everyone (well mac not be available to everyone because of price but available to most people)

You can than Micorosoft for the low price OS, early on the free complier/tools and SDKs, and places like compaq and dell, packard bell for making the IBM PC competitively priced.

Thanks Gates and even Apple. The stuff you guys make does not suck.

While these do cause a big problem which can be overcome by backups I think the biggest problem Microsoft has had is they try won't move on. They are still trying to produce a pc that works with every peice of chinese junk hardware and software, as well as backwards compatability with the oldes software. Right now you can run an old dos program on XP, then they said no banana on windows 7 but wait, you can run a virtual machine, run xp then dos, oh joy. When will it end. Virus people are so happy about this compatabily stand microsoft has.

I don't get why anyone would use a Mac.

Are you serious ? Anyone ? You don't get why in a three horse race each horse would have it's backers ?
No offence or anything, but I find that statement far more incredulous than the entire 750 years of the Mac/PC 'debate' ! :drunk: Cheers !
