The owner's manual for your mixer might have a basic setup. You could start with that (I tookd the "Basic 8-track setup" in teh Tascam M-520 manual and started with that.)
As indicated, you need more patch bays, and get some china markers so that you can write down what is going on w/out it being permanent.
I have the buss outs going to the deck and to patch bay. Also, the effects I/O going to the patch bay, and tehn the aux sends/returns going to the patch bay the tape lin eouts going to tape in naturally, and lots of short cables. There isn't going to be one *correct* way to wire everything, just various degrees of convenient. Patchpays and cables can start to cost, so having ever imaginable permutation cabled for could be cost prohibitive. Having a plan ahead of time and wiring for the most common scenario helps.
