Alright guys,
This is only the second song I've put vocals on and posted. Your ears would be greatly appreciated. This is a very simple ditty and I'm contemplating adding some guitar flourishes in between bars to mix it up some.

Thank You,

Brad

I assume we're listening to "open the door"?

Not too bad. Add another rhthym track and pan them wide. The bass gtr is a little muddy, but not bad. You've got nice kick/bass seperation, the bass just needs a little more attack.

Are those real drums?

sounded pretty good to me...all the levels sounded right and very clean on my paltry system..

another track would fill it up a bit more as it does sound a little sparse but it all works..good job :)

Greg,
Thanks for the listen! Actually, I had a track of Strat/5150/w/57 mic'd 1x12 already laid down, but I didn't like the sound at first, so I muted it. After your comments, I pulled it up, eq'd it, and added some compression and a kiss o 'verb and it fills things out nicely. I previously heard that lack of attack and bumped the upper eq on the bass track, but it was not enough - I'll check again.

I thought you'd be the one to tear my drum sound to bits! :D I'm pleased that I got you to ask the question. They're just my fingerings without a lot of quantization and some good samples.

I was hoping for more surf, but too bad for me :). Drums sound pretty good. Bass could use some more bite to it. A little empty overall...sparse is fine, but another guitar track mixed in there somewhere would help fill things out I think.

Oh wait...I just heard a tremolo guitar break...there's a surf connection right there. Vocals could come up I think too. Great clarity overall. Nice work so far :).

Thanks for the listen heatmiser!

Yup, I knew when I started singing about palm trees, breakers and the Coast hwy, I had to throw a little Dick Dale vibe in there. I hope you liked the tremolo lead break; it seemed a little weird to me at first.

Thanks for the confirmation about the bass lacking bite and the missing guitar track. About the vox; I noticed people on the forum don't like wet vox at all, so I figure if I can't have my effects bath, I'll just bury the vox :D I'm just a dinosaur stuck the tar pit of the 80's! I guess I'll give'm a bump when I add the guitar track. ;)

Remix

In case anyone has a minute, I remixed the tune "Open the Door 2"

WELL, i'm diggin the guitar tone.
it's not very bitey, a bit of 2khz-3khz would bring it out a little more for definition..
but i like the tone.

the bass guitar sounds fine to me in this mix, but the kick and snare of the kit are very weak in the mix.
at least, the kick sounds like it needs more volume and a boost around 60 khz
i'd add some meat to the snare as well, something between 100hz and 180hz.

the vox ARE a bit buried in places. mix it so you hear every word clearly......

flourishes would be perfect.
just enough to fill between the meat of the vox and drum fills...
and not to step on anything else.
they could be fast little things, or simple melodies and harmonies.
think of it from a producer point of view, not a player.

Real nice tune.
Actually if you panned the guitars left and right, you wouldn't need to bring the voice up, 'cos you'd be making space for it. Nice guitar tone and the drums sound real good. But it would be nicer if it didn't sound that mono IMHO.

Joey :)

+1

I like this mix better from what I remember of the first, but I agree with the above 100%. Just some more...uh...something...to give the whole thing a fuller, more produced sound would help to my ears. It sounds fine as is, but I guess I'm not getting a real raw vibe from the whole thing (which would be more appropriately presented in this sparse arrangement), but instead that it is meant to sound somewhat produced...so go for it and fill it out a bit. Just my .02 :).

Yeah, dude... Love the feel of the song. Great rocker. The distorted guitars sound awesome. Nice and distorted, but easy on the ears.

Production sounds polished.

The breakdown has some weirdness in it.. Not sure.. Maybe it's the percussive noise that is echo'ed... Not quite getting that.

The rest of the song sounded nice. I envision listening to this cruisin' down the highway in my Stang.

Great little diddy.
