5 String Bass?

I've been looking into some bass guitars and found this:

I like it, and it seems to be a pretty decent guitar. I play electric and never have I played a bass so I don't want to get to over the top.

That guitar is a 4 string bass, I was wondering if it's worth it to get a 5 string bass. I don't see my self playing live or anything, just for laying bass tracks down along with some guitar parts. How much would the extra low sting contribute to the sound of my recordings? Is it enough to spend the extra money?

Thanks

Learn to play this and you'll have learned something worthwhile. :)

I'm a bass player. I recently acquired a 5 string.
It's interesting & makes some great deep noises BUT it takes extra thinking to play because it adds the extra low B below E. This means it doesn't replicate the 4 string bass or the 4 lower strings on a guitar (unless you're a 7 string player).
The additional string is a plus for death metal and drop tune playing but it's REALLY hard for me to get my brain around the extra string - in fact I tend to play the thing & ignore the extra string as I can't replicate runs etc that I've developed over the years.
Fretless - I'd love one BUT if I were learning it'd be coverd in position dort stickers until I got my ear in.
In short - get a 4 string bass - & a decent one at that.
THEN DON'T play it like a guitar - try to play it like a bass.

for me it's 5 string all the way.

And the coolest thing about them is not the extra low notes. The coolest thing is being able to play that low E on the 5th fret and not having to always hit an open string to get it.

...because hitting an open string is so difficult?

No.

Playing that F on the 6th fret, though, is a lot easier than trying to play an open F by quickly grabbing the tuning peg, twisting, and praying. ;)

Why would you need to play an open F? Is the first fret out of reach?

I can do an 8-1 stretch on a guitar, barely (6th position would put your pointer finger at the 6th, index at the 8th), but on a bass? Yeah, it's a bit of a stretch. :p

WTF does any of that shit even mean?

Fret the F on the first fret of the low E string of your bass.

Now, holding that note, fret the F on the 8th fret of the A string.

When the paramedics finish reattaching your fingers, come back here and post up and tell me how well that went. :D

Why the fuck would I do that when I could just fret the 3rd fret of the D string? Does your 5 string bass only have 2 strings? :D

Playing bass doesn't need to be that strenuous.

No, it doesn't. But imagine a hypothetical playing situation where you're riffing away in F mostly between the 6th and 8th frets at a moderate clip, and you wanted to drop a low F into your bassline, while still keeping all those higher notes you'd been playing in easy reach.

That's a hell of a lot easier if you don't have to jump down to the first fret and then jump back up, and as you said, why should playing bass be more strenuous?

Play it on the higher strings.
