hello

I'm a newbie in analog world so sorry if my questions seems stupid :)

I come from digital world and plugs etc...

I decided to try some tape machines.
I tried A77(7,5 ips) and a b77(15ips) with new tape.

I sent an entire mix before pre mastering in it and I noticed that all the frequency responses are different.
Most of all there is a lot of high frequencies.
I wonder how to pre master a track with an analog tape because it was like my eqs on mix were too much. do I have to re-eq after analog tape like remove some High frequencies ?

also, should I send tracks by tracks or stems to revox ?(to have that tape compression)

Sorry for my english.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
kikidi

What kind of tape are you using?

There are record bias and EQ settings on these tape decks that you must adjust depending on the type of tape you use.

Since you've never used analog before, are you using information from user manuals to set recording levels, or do you have other sources for basic recording procedures?

Specifically, what do your VU (level meters) look like while you're recording? Are you keeping your average level around 0 VU?

Also, if the B77 is anything like the PR99 (that was based on the B77), on the bottom of the machine there are trim pots that adjust the playback treble. If they are there, you may find they have been set too bright and need turning back. Mine were and now they are all good.

However, it sounds to me like the whole machine could do with a calibration by someone who knows what they are doing so you know then that you are starting with a clean sheet.

:)

I use an Rmg international Studio Master.
About the level recording, I tried different settings but it is the same about HF.
I saw that there were trims behind the b77 deck but nothing on A77(that's the one I have a the moment.). I think I need to go see somebody that can calibrate/help me a little..

With the rackmount case, the trimmers are exposed on the B77. With the wooden case w/ carry handle, you have to unscrew the machine from its case in order to get at them (yes, this is annoying). I believe the A77 is the same.
