Kick Drum mic Poll

i own an APEX 125 bass drum mic. it's "decent" or "will work" for recordings and live it's all good, but i did get it off of Ebay for like $35 or $40. I'm sure it's not the best mic in the world but worth mentioning. It was cheap, did the job i was needing it for (live sound reproduction and a drummer friend's audition viddy).

I noticed there haven't been many comments about the e902 in this and most of the other kick threads.

I guess they're not exactly the go-to for many out there, but does anyone have experience with this mic?

I just picked one up for $50.

There has been a lot of comments about the Audix D6. I am wanting to buy a kick drum mic, and it is a toss up between the Audix D6 and the ATM25 (2nd hand as it is out of production). Which one should I get and why?

I currently own a 421, a D112 a beta52 and a D6

They all have their purpose and place on different drums

If i'm shooting for more boom I'll use more of the 52in the mix,
The d112 i always thought was tight and allowed me to hear the wood of the drum

the D6 doesn't thrill me much, I think it's dull.

the 421 gives you some wood and click and boom.

I used an MD421 during my last recording session (back in May) which was okay (didn't put too much time in placement though).

Now I got a Beta 52 and a Beta 91 off ebay very recently. In fact, I haven't even received them yet. Gonna put them to the test in two weeks during a recording session. Can't wait. I expect a lot, especially from the 91. It's going to be interesting.

I did see at a few places where people are using the SM7 for Kick drum over at Shure.com...Im sure there could be samples of it being used on youtube.

I really like the sound of the d112 you can get an aggressive sound close up and a very wooden ambient sound at like 2 feet. here you can hear our recording with the d112 on a tama swingstar. http://primatehouse.bandcamp.com Whole album is almost done being mastered this is just a rough demo.

i've always liked the sound of the RE-20 in the kick drum, but right now my RE-20 is broken, so at the moment i've been using the beta52 with the beta91 in there as well. it works quite well for me.

whats wrong with the D6? I love that mic!! of course I play mostly prog... I like it because it already has that kind of scooped tuned in sound... very tight. I also love the D112 but a totally different sound. I actually right now am running D6 and D112 simultaneously and mixing them in different combos... getting some pretty good tones. I sold my 52 because it sounded too much like a wannabe D112 that failed although with a beta 91 in combo with the 52 was pretty good. I also own the e602 and that one sounds kinda cool if you're going for that ULTRA scooped pantera kind of sound. It sounds a bit like the D6 but not as tight and the D6 is heavier in the low mid thump...generally just more filled out but still has that scoop that I like.

I was just playing with Drumistic And as you have pointed out any microphone to be used is a matter of personal preference, unless it comes to the point of it just not capturing the true sound of the source with out having a fake scooped built in curve.

I will say that the D6 is a very good mic for certain types of music. It is VERY colored and will make a weaker shallow sounding kick drum sound nice and fat. I personally prefer a mic that captures the actual sound of the instrument and allows me or the audio engineer to EQ it to taste.

So basically I am agreeing with moresound but I'm just adding more definition.

I have a D6 and a D112. I like the D6 more but that is because of the crazy curve the mic has right off the go. I've also used the Beta 52a and thought that was decent as well. Never used any of those other mics.

The D112 (IMO) takes more time to tweak both at the source (placement) and post with eqing it to taste. I was never happy with the results I got from it so I moved it onto the floor tom where it does much better (IMO).

And lets not forget to tune those drums up kids, then there is no need for a colored microphone to be used in the first place.
That and the right drum kit for the right job.

Glad to hear you guys' opinions! Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I'm not normally one for mics that color the sound a lot, but I think I might make an exception for the D6! It's the sound I'm going for anyways.
