how do i use a Motu 896 optical ADAT as mic pre's with 003

I'm trying to figure out how to get my Motu 896 interface to work with my 003 running protools 8. I believe i have it synced with protools correctly, though i can't seem to get the 003 to slave to the 896 word clock. other than that they recognize each other and show up as optical ADAT inputs in my I/O settings.

I'm basically trying to use the 8 additional mic pre's in the 896 to run as inputs 9-16 in protools through the optical / firewire cabling.
