Here's Your Big Chance To TOTALLY Diss A Famous Guitarist

So, this is a thread about "bashing your betters?" Puh-leeze.

I'd rather enjoy music than worry about which artist is violating my own limited sense of what's appropriate to his or her art.

My sense of appropriateness is not limited. I like everybody but SRV! :p

The OP said Diss A Famous Guitarist, not a wanker that's famous in his/her own head.:p

That's exactly the point. I am famous. You on the other hand don't have even a single z list celeb on your cv. The biggest venue you have sold out is probably your bedroom and that was only because your mom bought tickets.:p

Zing!!!!!!!!

I know I'm gonna catch hell for this . . . . but Eddie Van Halen! I mean, great, you can play fast! Good, but there isn't a shred of emotional attachment to anything besides his own technique. At least the other "shredders" are honest enough to not start a "band" and just did their thing, but EVH starts a self honoring band complete with rediculous lyrics, nuts in a vice shrieks, and enough bombast to last a millenium. I'm just tired of it. Yeah he has tallent, but that doesn't mean he is a good musician.

Herman Li (I'm probably spelling that wrong), of Dragonforce. I'm glad they're not very popular anymore. He might secretly actually know what's going on, but they spend about 4 minutes of every song doing over-the-top solos. It's fine for a couple songs when you're playing live, but not EVERY song, especially not on a recording. Ugh. They would be so much better if they'd just cut that out.

My biggest problem with him is his lack of growth. After Dave left, the very first Sam Halen album sounds exactly like the last, 5 albums later.

oh....and he's a dick.:D

I'm sure you're right about the reasonings behind the lead in every solo. However, for a work related project, I needed to check out Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again," after not having heard it for ... geez ... 20 years or so. And I must say, Adrian Vanderberg played a pretty nice solo on that tune. It was incredibly melodic. Sure, it featured the tired, overused speedy ascending lick to the climactic high-bend ending, but the solo itself was very well played and well conceived, IMO.
I could be wrong, but I think John Sikes did all the guitars on that album. The band that toured (Vandenburg, Sarzo, Campbell, Aldridge) came together for the first time when they filmed the 'still of the night' video. The album was already mixed by that time.

(I guess a bunch of people beat me to it)

My personal pick is Randy Rhodes. He isn't revered for what he did necessarily, just when he did it. You can always assume that he would keep innovating and growing, but if you look at people who didn't get killed at the height of their carreer, you find that that is not the case most of the time.

He is just another person that happened to die when he was at his coolest. Like Morrison, Joplin, Hendrix, Cobain, etc... They never had a chance to embarrass themselves and become irrelevant. They never faded off into obscurity and took up golf.

That's actually not correct. Sykes did all the guitar parts on the album except for that one solo.

Sorry dude, he's gotcha here. Vandenberg's only solo spot on that album was Here I Go Again. Still of the Night was Sykes.

I'm not exactly sure who you're addressing, but I was the one who originally claimed that "Here I Go Again" was a great solo by Vanderberg.

If this is what you meant, then please disregard. :)

Hendrix, definatly hendrix the guy could play for sure, and his style was a different and stand out in its time, but when people say, "hey can you play purple haze?'
like its some kind of right of passage it drives me up the wall!!! his stuff was pretty basic to a guitarist! but everyone that doesn't play or have an ear has been conditioned to belive that he is the unrivaled champion of the six string! it just gives me gas like bad gas ya know what i'm sayin?

Oops.:p

You may be famous on this BBS 'cause you run your damn mouth so much, but I aint never heard of ya; and don't wanna. Btw, my sisters and brother bought tickets too...so there!:D

sounds like he is on a power trip to me:D
probably would not have sounded as evil if he would have used the proper spelling sole rights instead of soul rights:p

You know, you are right- but when I read that little call out (of me as a speller, not a guitarist) I laughed so much I decided to leave it like it is!

I left for the weekend right after I started this thread to go whitewater kayaking, and am just dying reading some of the post. I am loving the post I have read so far, and I am not even past the first page!

EDIT: I think I might love the way everyone seems to be rising to the occasion and falling into the spirit of the thing, here- this may be some of the most entertaining stuff I have read here.

KEEP 'EM COMING! YEAH!

I don't think anyone says that Hendrix is the most technically proficient or complex player of all time. I believe he is seen as more of a revolutionary in making the guitar a feature instrument as opposed to strictly vocals which seemed to be the norm for the time besides an occasional 10 sec guitar solo. I'm excluding Jazz of course. I enjoy Hendrix because of what he could say in so little notes. I feel like everything he played carried such weight to it. But then again, I'm clearly very biased (which is kind of the point of this thread).

Yet another nobody who can dish it out but can't take it. Priceless.;)

Is anyone else confused as to wether Muttly and David are actually arguing or being sarcastic??

I'm gonna get hell for this, but I can't stand Hendrix. Sure, he's a great guitarist, but unless it's a more well known song like Purple Haze or Fire, the rest of his music is just tedious to listen to. He's a terrible singer and his lyrics suck.

GASSSSSSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT?????????????????????????????? Little wing is a beautiful song to mention one besides his more known songs, and of course the lyrics aren't going to make much sense he was high when he wrote them!

I always understand what he's talking about. Besides, wheres the fun if you don't have to listen a few times to get the meaning?:p
