That depends... are you interested in a matched set of SM-57s for $1,279... They're certified genuine Sure with all factory documentation and frequency response charts...

But you have to have just the right amount of oxygen in the cable insulation or your $100 mic will sound like crap!
 
I Just hought I would stir up the locals. :p

I actually started the post on something I saw that at first glace I thought was an insane price, but then I read the add closer and realized I might have been ok.. not that I would bout it. Nonetheless, I had already submitted the post, but then I went back to clean my tracks.


BTW, I do know better, but sometimes sales folks make you wonder somedays.
 
As a rule, if it says 'professional' on the box, it's designed for amateurs.
 
High price = High end is --- misleading to some extent.

High price = less excuses. You don't need to spend a bundle to get a chain that's capable of producing a good recording (notice I said *capable* of, as no chain just "makes great recordings" on its own). But a high-price/high-end chain can certainly remove a lot of road-blocks in that endeavor...

Well said!! :)

I do believe that experience can overcome most of the limitations on low-end gear; a less experienced engineer may not know what to listen for or know how to get around those roadblocks with the same gear. If he does find it, it would take a considerable more amount of time.

Naturally an experienced engineer would shine on the high-end gear. The less experienced engineer on that same gear may not shine, but his mixes should sound better than if he had mixed them on the lower gear simple because he does not have to remove or work around the limitations of those road blocks.

In my own experience there is a simpler way to find what is high end. More weight + less knobs = sounds good. :)
