Two things here. Your preferences are obviously being reset. And when you say no audio do you mean a blue region block with no audio or absolutely no audio? Did Pro Tools throw a warning that it couldn't find the audio files?

Further..

I have my plugins list with manufactuer and plugin name..well that was bock to just name

I have NO idea what this means. Could you be more specific?

For now since the majority of things seem to surround preferences ....pitch them. It certainly doesn't seem like digi data bases are corrupt although it's tough to tell from your description but...pitch those as well. Also check to make sure your disk allocation has not gone buggard although if it has Pro Tools would surely tell you upon re-booting that session it couldn't find audio files.

Overall this sounds as if Pro Tools is confused. Do you have multiple copies of Pro Tools installed? Did you re-install without un-installing first? Have you run a disk utility (in this case and unfortunately) it would most likely be run on the internal applications drive?

Is this a lap top on batteries? Do you have some sort of real time virus protection running?

Thanks for helping!!!

Having tech supported for years I always get a big chuckle when some one says "I've been using Pro Tools for years and it's never done this before". That simply has nothing to do with anything.

I know your preferences are re-set we've established that but the question was "have you pitched your preferences??" Digidesign has ALWAYS had a utility tool for pitching preferences and data bases for PC. Look on their DUC sticky page under PC setup. You need it.

Ok..will do..I know I went through and deleated the database and things like that with the TWEEK info from digi!!

OK..I found some I did not deleat...Thank you so much...I have seen how much time you take to help people on here and I just want to thank you from all of us!!!!!

Did you seek out the Digi preference tool?? I'll repeat myself. This is a vital maintenance tool for Pro Tools. The long term well being of the application depends on a series of scheduled up keep. The effort put forth in understanding these scheduled up keeps (preferences, data bases, de-frag, disk utilities, ect) are worth their weight in gold!

When I hear you say "I found some that I did not delete" it makes me scratch my head.

The Digi tool would render that statement impossible.

Do you mean the Prefs & database trasher?

Yes..there are two. One for PC that's been around for a long time. It's actually a Digi sub application.

The other for Mac which is very effective, is third party and available on the Digi/Mac/TDM forum.

Is this true when running Pro Tools with OSx?

Well yes of course. I'll assume you mean compared to the old OS9 handling of audio files. OSX is (as you know) much better at file management than earlier Mac OS's and defragging and maintenance is less critical. Especially when the drives are less than full.

That said keeping an eye on your system still should be some form of a regular, scheduled routine.

Understanding Pro Tools preference pages is critical and conversely pitching those preferences often can't hurt. The file directory tool (data bases) seems to get often tangled and a regular trashing is recommended.

I no longer believe in the old defragging using a utility HOWEVER I do wipe my audio drives clean fairly often. Say 3 or 4 times a year at least. This obviously requires some pre planning but it's been years since I've had a major meltdown.

NO sir..I did not get a tool..I looked up "Trash pref" on didgi sight..and followed the instructions..I will now go get the tool!!

When I say I found some..I never went into common files-dae..I just deleated the database off each drive when you opern them!!

Yes I found the audio in the audio folder...cant understand why it was not on the tracks..I save after each take and there was 4 tracks missing!!!

OK..all I could find is The "tech support utility" and It had a option to deleate pref....and I did it..so am I good now, or is that not the tool you were talking about...I could not find "Digi preference tool"

Ouch..I detect a note of sarcasm:) Sorry if I came across demanding but you would never in a million years believe how many folks over the years came screaming at me for tech solutions only to stubbornly not follow through with the offered solution. Then come screaming again when the problem is compounded. Computers are fickle and as you know what works on Monday doesn't always work on Tuesday. The ability to sense small problems from large often dictate the path of correction.

That said if you develop a relatively simple routine of maintenance, backup and understanding you drastically reduce system problems over the course of the lifetime of the computer. More importantly if you have the simple everyday generic problems of Pro Tools recognized and under control you'll be less likely to panic when more difficult surprises arise.

Yes the Digi Support Tool is handy. There is a more comprehensive tool on the Digi TDM Mac page but last I checked it was Mac only. There were however some rumors that a PC version was imminent.

As to the mis-directed audio files..fairly common as preferences get tangled for the disk allocation to get scrambled. This also happens when importing sessions from "other" computers or even other drives. Until things settle down I'd go to your disk allocation page every time you fire up a session and re-select the correct drive for allocation.

Also it's not a bad idea in these situations to "save copy in (select audio files only)" all your important sessions in order to re-address (nest) the audio files to that session.

Only trying to help here!
