what is this?
After looming over the Cockos website and hearing nothing but good things for the last two years, I think I have decided to change recording platforms... ;)

I have been running Cubase SL3.XX (whatever the last update was) on my windows XP system for the past 3 years and loving it. Now not only is my computer screwed but I think I broke my security dongle (which may be a reason my PC is screwed). A few months ago I had the dongle plugged into the front USB port on my comp and I tripped and bumped it, effectively bending it to a nice angle. It's worked since then but now my PC is acting up and, according to Microsoft (decoding the error messages that are on my bluescreens), it's a driver or device issue. They said that it's either a device plugged in needs updated drivers (BS, nothing's changed in the past 3 years) or it's my RAM. Either way it's the Autochk loop that's killing my mood day after day. Either way, I'm building my own comp this time...

I have a question about this Reaper conversion though...

The comp I use for recording is NEVER (I repeat, NEVER) used for any internet surfing, never logged onto the net, never anything involving it. In light of that fact, will it be possible to download reaper on my laptop and then transfer it (via CD or USB thumbdrive) to the desktop? And, what about the updates?

Sorry about the long post, just got off a 2 hour phonecall with MS tech support which did nothing, had to vent a little... Any Reaper info would be appreciated!

I dont think youll have a problem with downloading reaper to your laptop and then transfering to the pc, but updating it might be tricky, if the updates come as standalone files (installer files) you wont have any problem, but if reaper updates itself internally, then you wont be able to do it without an internet connection on your pc. But, hey, if it works allright you may not need updates, unless theres some cool extra feature, i dont see the problem, like they say "if aint broke, dont fix it"

its an installer -- you simply have to download it and put it on a drive and bring it over.

any other questions?

I suggest you visit the official reaper forum, even though this place is great, youll find a much larger base of users that can answer questions very quickly.

but if you have any other questions, ill check this thread and lead ppl to it :D

I actually have a very similar setup. My recording computer is at least one room over from any network cables even. Reaper updates and installs using a standard Windows install .exe.

You'll have to manually check the Reaper web page to find new updates, but once you get the file transferred to your recording box, updating is simple.

That is, of course, assuming you want to update. My soundcard only has a "beta" driver available, so for some inexplicable reason the latest version of Reaper crashes horribly. Fortunately, they archive all the old versions, so you can rollback to whatever version you want.

Awesome! Thanks for all the help guys! I joined on as a member on the reaper forum so as soon as my computer situation is resolved I will be in business. Thanks again!
