Nuts!

Something was wrong, maybe cross-threaded.

Nope. The stove bolt was going into plastic. (Crappy American brand satellite dish.) The plastic couldn't take that much stress. It definitely wasn't cross-threaded; the lock nut was okay at first, then got progressively tighter with every turn until it would barely turn by about 3/4ths the way up the bolt....
