    Too much ride

I've got too much ride in my overhead microphones. I can't really bring them down more in the mix 'cause then it doesn't sound good at all. Any tips or tricks that I can try to fix this? The ride is both loud AND inconsistent in volume so it'd really help to tame them somoehow. Thanks!

    Compressors

I know how they work and I know the parameters, except for one thing. People say, when describing compressors, that they lower loud parts and raise quiet parts. It's the last part that I don't get. If I put a signal through a compressor with a 2:1 ratio, any part of the signal that exceeds the...

    Drum experts help

I'm writing an essay for school and was thinking about real recorded drums vs. fake drums (Ezdrummer etc.) I know it's not the most original subject but it interests me. I was thinking about making a test where there are two tracks to listen to; one of a recorded drumkit played by a drummer and...

    DI on Mbox 2?

So before I got that Mbox2 and protools, I used a pc with a behringer mixer (2 mic inputs) and a Audiophile Firewire soundcard. If I wanted to record my electric guitar I'd just plug it into the mixer and go. The sound was what it was but for my purpose of recording ideas it was ok. So now I...

    Harsh sound

I've got a song with two acoustig guitars, bass, drums, a rhodes and electric guitar (not all at the same time!) and I'm trying to mix it as good as I can (homerecording, you know...). I'm getting pretty good results as far as making it sound clearer and more separated, all relative of course to...

Mbox 2, can't listen in stereo.

I'm running Cubase SX 3 with an Mbox 2. I can't figure out how to hear things in stereo. No matter what I do to a track, I don't hear the effect as I listen back. There isn't a hell of a lot of things to do on the Mbox itself (except for the mono button and the mix "wheel") so I'm guessing...

    Basic mixing ideas

I've got a song with two acoustic guitars panned to each side playing the same part, drums and bass. I'm trying to fit an electric guitar in there too but I'm such a newbie still that I don't know where to start trying to make things fit. The drums are artificial so they're fine I guess. The...

    Mbox 2 mini

Hey! I'm thinking of buying this thing, but I'm still new to all of this and the USB thing worries me. I have an M-audio firewire and that's all I've ever used, but I need to be able to run Protools on my computer. So what should I think about when it comes to the USB thing. Will there be a...

    Mixing on headphones

So I know that this is not recommended at all. But. I've read some discusssions about monitors and importance of quality etc. (here and on other forums.) Something that often comes up when talking about having to mix on cheap/inaccurate monitors is "learn your monitors", "listen to a lot of...

    Hearing the difference

So I've been starting to try to learn som EQ, and I've started out by looking at these general frequency charts just to get a starting point. And I just can't hear the difference. I apply like 6 dB boost or cut and I just sit there thinking "ok...I can't here what that did to the track". To...

    Two mics to different tracks

I can't get thir to work. I have a mixer that goes to a audiophile firewire. I've got two mics and just want to experiment with recording vocal and guitar at the same time, but not to one track (cubase). I look at the in's and out's but can't figure it out. I feel stupid 'cause there aren't...

    Once again

Hi I posted this song almost two years ago, when I was about as good at recording as I am now (which means not good at all!), and I got some comments then that I didn't really understand. I went and took out a lot of lows from it because I had at least evolved enough to know it had way too...

    Practicing compression

I've been trying to get some knowledge of compression and I'm running in to problems. I've been using a plugin that lets me see what is done to the file as I change the settings. So I'm falling into the trap of trusting my eyes more than my ears (I don't trust them at all yet anyway). I'm...

    Signal flow

I read through the guide at tweakheadz, and I see that for a setup like mine (microphone -> mixer -> audio interface -> computer) they talk abou the setup being done in a certain way. From microphone to mixer, from mixer to AI, from AI to computer, from computer back to AI, from AI to mixer and...

    Headphones question

I know it's not a good idea to mix on headphones. But while tracking, if everything sounds good on the phones, can I trust that I can get it to sound good on monitors too? Maybe I'm not clear enough... If everything sounds good in the phones, does that mean that with different mixing and...

    Subtractive eq

So it's recommended to use subtractive EQing rather than boosting frequencies. Would it then be better to record an acoustic guitar with too much bass and then use subtractive EQ on it than the other way around? This sounds stupid I know, of course I should just record the guitar right...

    Instruments arriving

So I have what might be a weird question. I've got far from anywhere near the knowledge that it would take to do this, if it's even possible, but I'm curious. I had an idea for a while about a song, where all the instruments sort of arrive one at a time. Like first there is nothing, then maybe...

    Exporting

I have a problem (again) with exporting audio. I imported an mp3 file, took away some bass from it and changed volume. I can't seem to export it again. I have the markers correct and I do nothing differently from what I do when I want to mixdown songs. I get an mp3 file and when I try to play...

    two tracks at once

Probably a stupid question but this is the place for it, right? (newbies, not the whole forum). So far I've only been focusing on tracking one thing at a time, but now I'm thinking of trying to track guitar and vocals at the same time. I have two mics, and a mixer. I just can't figure out how...

    Drum terms

Since english is not my first language, I'm not familiar with all the terms you use for the drums. I mean, I know what you mean by tom, snare, kick, ride, hihat and symbals. I don't know what heads are and stuff like that. Is there somewhere I could find out about this so I can follow all the...
