Beatles Cover - Dig A Pony

Thanks for the comments! Listening to this again, I do think the vocal needs to be louder in the mix. Tracking vox again isn't really an option, so I may try making a double of this track and just shifting it forward and panning it to add some depth. To add some "high end sparkle," do you think...

Beatles Cover - Dig A Pony

Lots of comments about the vocals! I can't say I disagree with any of you. Haha. Any criticisms on/suggestions for the mix? Thanks for all your comments, guys!

Beatles Cover - Dig A Pony

Thanks. This is actually my friend singing this. He played guitar and sang, another guy played drums, and I played bass and keys. I agree that the vocals are a flat at times. He's not the strongest singer ever. I just left them as-is rather than trying to pitch-correct them. Thanks again for the...

Beatles Cover - Dig A Pony

Hi guys, Just wanted some opinions on this Beatles cover I recorded a few months ago for a friend of mine. Here's the link: The Beatles - Dig A Pony Everything was tracked through my Mackie Onyx 1620. Here's a quick rundown of some equipment used: Drum mics: Shure Beta 52 on kick, Audix D2...

Go from RP5s to RP6s, or get a sub?

Thanks for the input, Glen. You're definitely right about my monitor placement and room in general being a problem. Here's my current setup: I'm in a corner, and also have a crazy amount of acoustic foam on the wall. My dad used it as a rehearsal space for his band in the early '90s and put a...

Go from RP5s to RP6s, or get a sub?

Hey guys, Currently I am mixing with a pair of the first-generation KRK RP5 monitors. For the most part, I really like them, but I constantly have issues with bass in my mixes. I generally have to overestimate the bass level in the studio quite a bit for it to sound OK anywhere else. I'm...

Guitars - Use the amp's reverb, or add it in the mix?

Thanks for all the responses guys! I think I'll stick with adding reverb in the mix. I didn't think of the hassle it would cause with punch-ins, and I definitely have more control adding it later in the mix rather than when tracking.

Guitars - Use the amp's reverb, or add it in the mix?

Just wondering if there is a generally accepted way to do this. For the last CD I recorded (a 4-piece rock band with 2 electric guitars), I tracked the guitars with no reverb on the amps themselves and just added it in the mix. Is that how it's generally done? Or do guys usually use the reverb...

    Please critique my mixing

I think the kick drum could come down a bit. It's a little bit too present. The snare could come up a bit. I agree that the drums as a whole sound too dry, especially with the ambient-sounding stuff going on everywhere else.

Some songs from Pennsylvania rock band's debut CD

Hey guys, I've recently finished recording and mixing my first full-length CD for a band called The Leafs. They are a four-piece band (bass, drums, two guitars) playing all original material. There's a widget on the right side of their site where you can listen to a few of the songs from the...

    Homestudioguy Studio Rebuild

Awesome, man! Looking forward to seeing the progress. PS: Are you still planning on posting instructions for building the new workstation on your web site? I've been waiting for that for a while. I actually built a desk based off of your original $80 workstation plans, and it's working great! :)

    TheLeafsBand.com - New web site!

Hey guys, I've been working on a web site for my brother's band, The Leafs. They are a four-piece rock group from southwestern Pennsylvania that plays covers ranging from Tom Petty to Rush, but have more recently been working on their own original material. On the site you can find photos of...

    Recording Flute Recital

OK, so I should place the mics in between the flute and piano, but how should I orient them? Should they be fairly high and facing down like overhead mics, even in ORTF? That seems like it would be the most logical to me. Thanks for your help, by the way.

    Recording Flute Recital

What do you mean by "in between"? I'd like to get a stereo room sound and also close mic the flute. Not sure that I need to get more piano, though I guess I could mic it with the FatHead and add it in the mix if I really want to.

    Recording Flute Recital

My girlfriend's senior flute recital is coming up on Tuesday, and she asked if I would record it for her. The instrumentation will be flute accompanied by a large (and loud) Steinway grand piano. The venue is a very nice sounding ~200 seat recital hall, and the stage is really just a slight...

Another Poll...What Desk Do You Use...

I used to use a Yamaha MG 16/4 along with a M-Audio Delta 1010LT which actually sounded pretty nice. Right now I'm using a Mackie Onyx 1620 w/ firewire.
