    M-Audio Profire 26/26

I suppose they are. I mean: They probably really are but the recording sessions that I did so far were in less than ideal rooms which has a bigger inpact on the sound than the preamps. The DI's are definitely pretty good. I'm primarily a bass player and recording my basses works very well when...

    M-Audio Profire 26/26

Pretty much so. A Behringer ADA8000 would be an inexpensive way to expand your number of channels. I happen to own a Profire 2626 by the way and it's serving me well. A solid performer.

    Which computer setup is best?

I think the Mac Mini = great value for money. Believe it or not but it has plenty of power for the average homereccer. I use mine with Reaper. Works like a charm.

Do You Use A Separate Hard Drive For Audio

I use a Mac Mini.... :) So no options to add an extra hd internally. However, it's plenty fast for my recording needs. I did a performance test yesterday and it appears that the CPU is probably going to be the first to max out, depending on how many plugins I'd use. The hard drive doesn't break...

Buying a whole setup, what mics?

That surely sounds like a nice setup.

Buying a whole setup, what mics?

I have a Sansamp bass driver DI but over time I have started to use it more and more as a straight DI, bypassing al the tonal options. While it can beef up your sound, apparently I've grown to like a clean bass sound more. Heck, I now just plug my bass into one of the Hi-Z inputs of my recording...

Mics to avoid like the Plague

That's a major factor for me too. I've been shopping for kick mics lately and it's the main reason why I didn't bother with the Audix D6. While this mic has a good rep, I think virtually nobody knows about that mic here in Europe. So I picked up both a Beta 52 and a Beta 91 off ebay.

Members average number of rack units and a list...

LMAO. I know it's popular as a doorstop or paper weight but the 3630 is even more versatile than I thought.

Buying a whole setup, what mics?

Personally I'd plug the bass directy into the mixer. Usually that'll give you a usable bass sound effortlessly. Unless you have an absolute killer bass amp, I wouldn't bother sticking a mic in front of it. I'm a bass player and it's my preferred way of recording myself (since I don't own an...

    External Hard Drive question

I don't see why you can't connect both to the single FW port. Audio isn't all that demanding. Let's say 8 tracks at 24bits/44.1kHz = roughly 1 Megabyte/sec. FW400 reaches 50MB/sec theoretically. That leaves you quite some headroom. Just daisychain both devices together and connect them to your...

Great 8 channel interface for reasonable amount of $$$$

Well, usually interfaces with built in mic pres also have line-ins so you can bypass the pres and use some outboard ones.

Great 8 channel interface for reasonable amount of $$$$

I used to have an RME Fireface 800. Hardly used it and eventually sold it when taking a break from recording. It was too good and expensive for what I did or needed anyway and I could use the money back then. Recently I picked up recording again. Got myself an M-Audio Profire 2626. I had good...

    Kick Drum mic Poll

I used an MD421 during my last recording session (back in May) which was okay (didn't put too much time in placement though). Now I got a Beta 52 and a Beta 91 off ebay very recently. In fact, I haven't even received them yet. Gonna put them to the test in two weeks during a recording session...

    Behringer mics?

Yup. The first mic I ever bought was an XM8500, just because I couldn't afford anything else. I never a/b'ed it to an SM58 myself but I let a singer borrow it from me once and he found it not too shabby either.

Best Firewire interface for $800 or below

Hooked the 2626 up to my Mac Mini and it performed flawlessly. 7 channels drums, one for guitar and used the spdif for bass. I'm happy.
