How do I get my tracks up to a decent volume? Im sure its a combo of both the mix and then the mastering - but here's my dilemma
I use sonar v.4 as my host and I master with Izotope / soundforge.
So i have my mix - im happy with the all the instrument levels - and i make sure that nothing is peaking. It sounds pretty dandy...
and then I move onto the 'mastering stage'. And whatever I try and do to 'polish' the overall sound i.e. compression, harmonic exciters etc, just seems to totally bugger up my mix AND make the volume of the track peak like fuck. And this happens even when im being very subtle with my technique.
so i get it as loud and sharp as I can and export it down as a 16bit wav.
and it still sounds soooooo quiet compared with other CDs. and to rub salt in, my mix seems to have totally gone to pot by this point as well i.e. the guitars and bass suddenly overpower the drums and vox or whatever.
please just tell me where im going wrong. this is driving me nuts.
many thanks.
