Ok, we got a mic free with one of the keyboards (I think it was free... :-P) it's an Audix CD-11 Cardioid mic, if that matters...anyways, to hear it over the drums and guitars and keyboards, the keyboard it's plugged into has to be at extremely high volumes...however, then we get MASSIVE amounts of feedback...we get as far away as possible and we still can only put it at half volume...is there any way to fix that?

Yeah, use headphones when you record with it.

If he's talking about hearing it over the band I would think this is a live gig.

Urza - Cheap mics feedback easier then good mics. Get an SM58 and it shouldn't feedback at such low levels. If your playing in a small room that doesn't help either.

Why is the mic plugged into the keyboard? Are you sampling or using a vocoder?

yea, we're using a vocoder...the room's a bit small (about the size of a garage...it's a basement) and yea, headphones won't work...the whole band needs to hear it

What kind of keyboard is it? How are your monitors positioned? Does the mic ever point toward the monitors? Have you tried using a preamp?

1. Yamaha PSR 2000
2. uh...?
3. uh...?
4. if you mean like, putting an amp between the mic and keyboard, no...we're thinking of plugging the keyboard into an amp across the room though...if we can't get a better answer

By 2 and 3 I mean if you point a mic at the speakers the sound is coming out of you will get feedback. So try to postion the speakers and/or mic so that the mic will never point towards them.

And not an amp... A preamp. One of those things you plug a mic into before the signal goes to the amp. Do you have a mixer? Most mixers have mic pre's and channel inserts that will allow you to plug the mic into say channel one and then send that stronger signal out the insert into the keyboard, thus reducing the need to use extra volume on the keyboard.

ahh...well, the mic will pick up from all directions, and the speakers just sorta face up, so it'd be hard to point them away from each other...and we don't have a preamp or mixer yet...looking to get one soon though...

You could if everyone wore headphones or used in-ear monitors... or maybe just turned the volume down some... also cardioid mic's, and adding some sound treatment to the room would help.
