I wrote a song called " Your Ship" . I'm making a music video for it with a friend and it's being submitted to a contest. I could really use some help on mixing / adding efx (compression, etc) . I know the vocals aren't great, but i can't really change them anymore (at least i don't want to ) but I need help with levels, as I need this to be pretty solid for the video. I'd appreciate any feedback you can give at all

here's a link to lightnin mp3

p.s. sorry about the sentimental ness.

thanks guys

Ugh. Those background vocals kill it. The rest sounds about right for the genre.

Is it because I am off key or is it because they're prescence just ruins it? Too loud or soft? too much reverb. can you be more specific.

All of the above. They sound like ghosts in a bathroom. :o :p

What he said. I have to say it sounds pretty good and the off-key vocals gave it a feeling of intimacy. I like it, but those background sounded like drunken-high ghosts. LOL :D

so how's about if I try and re track the vocals, and use less reverb? or just not bother at all?

i'm still working on harmonizing :)

thanks guys

Yeah, and don't cry while you sing it this time. :D

ouch. listen to bright eyes and realize what a genius conor oberst is haha

i think i've come to accept my vocal style and i'm just going to utilize in a style of music that complements it the most.

thanks again.

You have to bring the lead vocal up. Sounds like there's a story here, but I can't hear it.

Something to experiment with the background vox is to blend in a warm pad from the keyboard. Mix it in lightly with the BG vox. Not so much to hear it, but to add more substance to the BG vox.

The guitar pick is pretty prominent. It might fit this style, but I don't know... i would suggest softening it up a little.

Are you mixing this song at a loud volume?? If so, you might try to mix it at a level a little lower than normal listening. You hear different things.

Cheers,

thanks,

so how can I lower the guitar picking? do you mean like the sound of the guitar pick strumming? Do I eq it out, by taking down some high end? I'll re listen and prob raise the vox a bit.

thanks

I dunno but I really like it as it is. It sounds like a natural demo and I'm a big fan of natural recordings. That off the cuff capture gives music a more personal and realistic feel. You could imagine this guy sat in yer front room singing it to you. I like that.

Thats not to say don't change things and experiment. Hell I've re-recorded some song 50/60 times til I got th feel I wanted.

Dig it Tojo. Very nice song.

thanks mr clean! I appreciate that. I guess you kinda identified the sound I am reaching for.

thanks.

Yeah, I'm talking about the pick strumming the strings. You can try to eq it or back off the compression a little. If you're up for it, you can retrack the acoustic and point the mic away from the sound hole. Honestly, I am no expert at micing an acoustic; I usually just point it at the 12th fret and mix it in with the p/u signal. That works pretty good for me.

Again, I like the song. I hope you do well in your contest.

oh well i didn't compress it, but I'll see what EQ can do.

thanks chili

Im not sure if you are mocking me but if so, I was originally trying to say something along the lines of: " I think that what you said described the sound that I am trying to achieve."
