Your Favorite Mic for Guitar Cabs?

Here's a pic of my AC30 being miked with my Royer 121 (tilted off axis to avoid wind blast) and an SM57.

Seriously, you should throw a pop filter or two between that cab and a ribbon mic. A nice blast of air could put that mic out of commission quick.

My favorite guitar cab mic is typically the AEA R84, it sounds like the original source.

Me too!! I feel you get a very balanced sound and a good blended mix.

try the back of that combo too.There can be some beef that can be used/found from the back of combos..check your phase between the front and back mics and rock n roll

I am going to do that on this next batch of clips.......

I'm going to use the same set up pictured, but then I'm going to add a mic in the back of the amp, and a room mic. BLend to taste!

I also agree with using a ribbon mic for guitar cabs. Currently I'm using a Thomann Brand RB-500 ribbon along with a MD431 or SM57, both mics usually slightly off-axis and into a TL-Audio valve preamp.. I highly recommend the RB-500, just €129 and I'm gonna buy another!

I usually like to start with a Sennheiser 421. But most of the time I end up using a 421 and SM57 combo.

AT 4033 works well for me, and I just got an old CAD E100 that sounds great on guitar cabs.

do you guys who are cautioning people to use pop filters between ribbons and cabs actually have experience blowing mics that way? i regularly use a beyer m500 and the nady rsm-2's right up on the grill of loud cabs.. sounds great, and i've never had a problem. they're tougher than some people think, and if you have to re-ribbon one every few years or whatever, who cares. in the meantime the mic is more than paying for the cost of re-ribboning.

me like md421. me thinks md421 gives most accurate portrayal of what me hear in room.
