After the drums (my instrument) the bass is my favorite instrument (GO RHYTHM SECTION... did i spell rhythm right?). Here are some of my personal favorites:

Matt Freeman (Rancid)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Justin CHancellor (Tool)
Paul D'Amour (Tool)
Paz Lenchantin (Bassist for the first A Perfect Cicle CD, she also did strings in the third)
Jeordie White (I believe he used to be Twiggy Ramirez and played for Marilyn Manson. But hsi work on the second A Perfect Circle and new NIN CD's isnt that bad. It certainly wuz much better than his work with Marilyn Manson :p
)

As i said, these are my favorite bassists, not the best. Because even I'm not ignorant enough to say that Paz and Jeordie are the best bassists. I just happen to really like their sound, more than others.

And don't forget

FRANCIS ROCCO PRESTIA!!!!!!!

He is, truly, what is hip.

Lots of great players mentioned already.

Now some other favorites of mine I didn't see mentioned yet:
Jonas Hellborg
Dave Hope
Dave LaRue

Paul McCartney
Stefan Lessard (DMB)
Joey Garza (Los Lonely Boys - I like bassists who sing lead and still play interesting bass lines)

one of my favourites is Dirk lance, the guy who played on all the incubus albums except the latest one..

he's got an amazingly tight style.. and has self control.. which in my opinion is probably the most important thing except timing for a bass player to have, especialy in a rock setting.

I'd have to say i don't have a favorite.....i enjoy listening to anyone who plays an instrument well....wooten, jaco...all these guys make you want to sell all your gear...lol

there's a guy who lives in st. louis who plays bass for Joyce Meyers worship team..Carl ....something.

this guy is awesome....
