I was at Turnkey music shop the other day and they had a mic demo room and for the first time I heard the Samson condenser mics the C01 and C03 .

Then I hear the Audio technica 4040 and some of the Rode mics and they completly blew the Samsons to smithereins.

I now know why the Samons are really cheap.

The audio tech mics really came out on top in terms of tone and frequency range and quality.

So i ordered the Audio technica 4040.

The Samson C01 is the only mic I've ever demo'd in a shop that I've thought sounded awful. And that was in comparison so an old SE that wasn't exactly great itself!

Hi noisedude

Do you mean SE Electronics?

I use to have an SE Electronics 2200 A. I must be crazy as I sold it , I don't know why but it was a lovely mic.

I am greatful guys some of you guys gave me some basic common sense advice , 'Try and check out the mic before you buy' . I tend to believe all the reviews i.e sound on sound's review on both the samson Co1 and the C03 was quite favourable,

Plus a lot of the music shops here in the UK don't always let you try out the mics.

Yeah but I mean the original SE2200, which was an OEM factory mic from somewhere or other. I still have it, it's not a bad mic but there is so much better to be had out there nowadays.

The shops are rubbish for trying mics out though, you're right.

Mr Blues, congrats on the 4040 it is a very usable mic, I like mine mine you can get some very warms sounds from it on just about any pre. I've never heard a samson before. I do have another brand that is dirt cheap that approaches the
sound of the 4040 that is the CAD M177. The only real difference is noise level.
The 4040 seems to rule here.

I got a free Samson mic when I bought my Tascam 2488 recorder.

I like the blue LED it has.

Dang i use that samson mic... im new but i dont think my stuff sounds too bad seeing as how thats the only item i have besides a computer and CEP...
Guess I didn't know the mic could matter that much!?!? SM 57 for vocals next maybe?

If you're trying to improve, do LOADS of reading here and lots of experimenting at home. Then you will be able to make some informed decisions.

I wouldn't recommend SM57s to most beginners because better results can be had with other mics, but keep learning for yourself and you can make your own choices!
