Dragon...
With all due respect, I didn't think it was necessary to make apologies for Ed. Irregardless of his recent "woman" troubles, Ed makes some very valid and credible points, and he's very passionate about making that point... there's nothing *wrong* with that. :)
It's "Ed" that writes all those great, informative articles on the the homepage, and "Ed" that is here in the trenches everyday to help out us amateurs. Stuff like his cable comparisons were very helpful and thought-provoking to all of us.
This guy (Mr. Paul) trots in here and thinks we should all drop to our knees and (as our president once said) "kiss it".
I don't think so.
If he had something to offer in a more clear, concise, and UNDERSTANDABLE manner, (as Dobro suggested)... than he would have earned a ton of respect from ALL of us.
He didn't do that.
Ed is one of a dozen or so people on this site who's opinions on recording is totally accurate about 99 percent of the time... which has benefitted me greatly. I hold his professional opinions in high regard.
That being said, Mr. Paul has offered us very little, except for a pissy attitude and confusing babble.
We've been down this road before.... with Father Time.
(and I stayed out of that one... completely!)
Just because Mr. Paul has more credibility than FT, it's still not a license for him to belittle those of us who visit here on a daily basis... to learn and share recording methods and ideas in a friendly, helpful, and understandable manner.
This is homerecoding-dot-com, not pro-recording-dot-com.
Come to think of it, I think the snobby know-it-alls at prorec.com would LOVE this guy. He's the epitome of everything they worship over there. ;)

I don't see what all the fuss is about. You want to record? Easy...just plop a blank cassette in the boom box and push the record button. Geez, now was that so difficult?

which tv show is this from?

my cat's breath smells like cat food.

bonus question: what is that characters name?

As I said in another post, the atomic fallout and polution is destroying peoples minds. Kristian here is a good example of what's happening to mankind in general.:)

The Simpsons

we have a winner. say that in as many accents as you can muster. and you will have a multifaceted term to categorise some of the members posting in this thread :)

Steven Paul may be a very talented whatever he is, but this guy certainly does not write like any physicist, optical or electrical engineer I know. Why do we want to ask the racecar driver how the ignition system works?

If we need detailed insight into how CD-R’s work and the tradeoffs (if any) of burning at different speeds, let’s try talking to the people who actually design them for a living. I would bet somewhere at TDK, Kodak, Verbatim, Sony, Yamaha, Teac, etc., they have engineers who are happy and well paid to answer these very questions.

Oh no, I won’t take that bait...:)

I made a quick call to Teac technical support. Not very elucidating, but the engineer did direct me to the OSTA (Optical Storage Technology Association) web site. I found a pretty good introduction to the issue of CD-R data integrity.

A very interesting quote from OSTA Q&A page:

“I've heard that burning a CD-R at double or quad speed is better than single speed recording. Is this true? If so, why?
There is some truth to this. The physics, chemistry and thermodynamics of the recording process seem to produce more consistent and readable marks within the CD-R recording layer when the recording speed is 2X or higher. This may be due to the annealing process of pit formation at 1X where the heat caused by the laser remains focused on the pit for a longer time. Newer recorders and media are tuned better for 2X and 4X recording speeds (although the Orange Book, Part II, until revised, only guarantees interchangeability at 1X and 2X recording speeds). Additionally, most of the newer 2X and 4X recorders have incorporated OPC or Optimum Power Control, which is a method to dynamically revise the recording laser power during the recording process to address media surface irregularities and differences between CD-R discs.”

8 times recording

I'm new to this forum so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. I record at 8 times all the time and I can't tell any difference. I've done live recordings and copying CDs, audio, everything sounds good to me and I have a real good set of ears. Hope this doesn't piss off anyone.Later, Donny!!!

No, I'm not kidding. Not kidding at alllllll. Not even a little bit. Of course, I can't speak for everyone else. They might be kidding, I just don't really know.

(Just trying to answer the title question since no one else did. BTW, what's a rhetorical question?)

A rhetorical question is what you ask when you want to get every last know-it-all to march out trumpeting long winded reams of subjective responses.

Hey - this is one of the most entertaining threads I've read for a long time. I'd just like to say that this is the first time I've been on this thre...

note to SPAUL (totally unrelated to thread):

Nice web-site! Er, um - you could try making the background stars stay in the same place when you scroll your page...

Here's how: add bgproperties="fixed" to your source - I tried it with a copy of your page and it looks pretty cool...

As you were, Gentlemen - back to the argument...

She's at it again!

Well today was interisting. The wife(who else), this time she is bitchin that her dryer isn't drying the clothes can I please come fix it. Stupid me I go their only to find this other guy their(a contractor) giving her an estmate on taking down two walls that she does'nt like. Now understand she is crying poverty all the time. I have real good ears and she knows this. Anyway I hear him tell her it's going to cost $2500.00 to get the job done. Now I spend an hour and a half cleaning the dam dryer. I finish the job and everything is working. As I'm leaving instead of thanking me she starts bitchin about wall paper. I could'nt get out of their fast enought. Then around 5PM she calls me from work and says she wants the wall paper from my living room. I just don't know it's getting more and more like a soap opra. It's making me crazzzzzzy. Later,Donny!!!

Sorry

Sorry fokes I'm in the wrong place this is how rattled I am. Later, Donny!!!

How fast does that dryer spin. This is important. If it spins too fast you may have bits of your cloths all over the drum. Too slow, maybe burnt clothing.
