Wow, this is incredibly pro-sounding. Can I ask what your gear/signal chain is? The vocal has an awesome presence. Perfectly full and round and powerful. Obviously, this has a lot to do with the very high quality of the performance, but really a pretty flawless job recording it as well.

What more can I say? Great choice of tune, great singing, great recording. This was a quickie? Sheesh!

Chris

hey crawdad, I know this song! my dad always spun the Roy version..

this is simply perfect imhop.. superb vocal delivery and sound.. pro all the way!

exceptional!

Man.......... do your vocals kick ass or wut:D Ive never heard the song, but your performance is a powerhouse of its own.

I know i keep asking you these questions....... but im trying to keep up on my Crawdaddery. Is this the same mic as turn the page? .....Im hearing less in the high mid's in this but im sure its just the mix.

I love your voice man. .......have i mentioned that:D

Beautiful... I haven't heard a good waltz in a long time. Great everything, including song selection.

Hey man, the verb...how do you do that...I mean, it's like 4 seconds long, but there's no mud on your vocal at all...and it's just apparent on the high end stuff...I want to do that. Please don't tell me it's not some $15,000 little white box that is only sold to Pro studios and you. :D

I'm gonna keep this short and simply say thanks to everyone for all the great comments.

I want to answer a couple of questions for Groucho, Chrisharris and Guernica. OK--signal chain. On the vocal and the acoustic guitar, I used the MXL V93 into a Behringer VX2000 preamp. On the preamp, I engaged the low cut at about 40hz, used the expander to help keep out noise from my computer, and I also used the optical compressor set for fast release. The signal goes to my MOTU 2408 and into the computer.

The bass was recorded through an ART Tube MP, compressed with a god-awful NanoCompressor--but, hey it sorta worked for this.

The reverb is a stock setting called "expensive vocal" (HA!) in Digital Performer, my audio and sequencing program.

Once I got the mix sounding as good as I could using EQ and some compression on the individual tracks, I made a stereo bounce of that. The last step is the fun part.

Although I know this isn't pro mastering (its homerec, right?) I use this little plug in called Spectrafier, which is basically a multi segment frequency meter. It shows me where the hot spots are. I then take EQ and tame those hot peaks until they don't overload anymore. Every time I use it I see that there is stuff in the low end thats too hot. In the process of taming those low spikes, the "mud" in the mix starts to vanish. Of course, I have to use my ears too as too much cut can start to kill things.

I ran a bunch of pro mixes through this Spectrafier just to see what they looked like in terms of frequency. I found a very similar pattern in everything and thats what I ballpark towards. Anyway, Chris--I think this process is what helps to take the boom and mud out of the verb. I actually don't boost any high end--its all cuts in the 40--500hz range. I suppose this is part of what those golden ear boys do without such assistance, but since I'm half deaf in my left ear, I'll try anything that helps!

I also want to apologize to Blue Cyberia for titling thsi thread the same as his--my mistake---doh!!! Maybe I can fix it.

And--Participant--I love ya man!!!

Another gem. Don't wanna sound crass, but you... s*** diamonds don't you? :p You can't do wrong, 'Dad. Damn. So jealous of the ability to get something (of this QUALITY) done as quickly as you/SLuiCe/Sam et al.

Oh... "Behringer" should use your stuff as an anti-defamatory campaign... seems like they could use some good press in the pro audio world (... "Mr. Crawdad of Detroit used what on all his stuff?!?") That's just plain awesome. You're the Harvey Gerst of the MP3 Clinic, 'dad. :)

Okay...as for that first comment, I'm assuming you're kidding...but if you're not...BAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahha.

Secondly, I'm ALL ABOUT cheating if it helps... darn it...I don't have a Mac. But I have an analyzer in WAVES that should do a similar thing. I'm running some of my favorite recordings through it right now, and guess what. LOOKS NOTHING LIKE MY STUFF. LOL. Anywho...I'm gonna' take a run at this, and I'll PM you and make you listen. :D

Thanks for sharing...it does help,
Chris

Well, at my age, there are mornings when it FEELS like diamonds (speaking of crass:D)

Well, I would really like to have a nice pre like the Great River or the RNP, cause maybe it would cut down on the mud buildup I spoke about. Since I have no pro pre to compare it to, I can't say if its the pre, the mic, digital recording in general. For home recording, this little vx2000 is a good unit. Lot of features for next to no money. (OK, Behringer, when do I get my free stuff? Wait--what would I really WANT anyway?!:D)

And I'm no Harvey, believe me. I'm just like that Curious George, the monkey--cause I'll try anything to see what it does to the audio! See, Harvey already knows more than I ever will.

baaah humbug-Well-this is my third time typing a reply to this thread-but someone at work here messed with this comp...etc etc etc.....The general gist of my previous efforts-is that this sounds great! Vocals sound especially excellent--I really can't imagine this sounding much better---I think I'll listen a few more times to try and chear up.....Very nice crawdad-thanks for the tune.

Stratomaster--You get the golden persistence award for sure. Nothing like a screwed up computer--I usually just give up! Thanks for the comments. gee...maybe a happy Christmas tune is in order to drive the humbug out.

I know! That 'Jingle Bells' version performed by the singing dogs...you know...woof woof woof woof woof woof woof arf arf woof......

Another good piece of work from the 'dad. As usual; great vocals and playing and a pro-sounding mix. Nice harmonies where you use them too. Makes me jealous bro.
Merry Christmas to you.

Great recording!!

Nice sincere sounding country song.

Great job!!

Sounds real good for a quicky. Sounds pretty good period.

I like your voice. It was quite well recorded here. Little reverb there? Used in a perfect amount for this type of song.

Nice job.

" a quickie after a couple of beers after work tonight"

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!

you know, i own one of them there V93's, and it doesn't sound anything like that!!!!!!!!!!  :D you have outdone yourself yet again!! nice very very nice!

thank's man!

Really beautiful!
What a great recording, feels like Willie, but much nicer!

The 93 sounds a lot warmer than the 4033,don't you think?
Especially the harmonies,wow.
Like and old friend used to say, made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!:D

Pro sounding all the way,no percussion was a nice touch.

Thanks for sharing it Crawdad,I really enjoyed it.

Happy holidays,
Pete
