--------------Disclaimer------------------
Before somebody starts ripping into me about another monitor post, understand that I HAVE used the search function and done the research and narrowed what I want down. But what I need now is specific opinions! I am aware that the best thing to do is to compare the monitors with a mix I know well, but given that I live in Australia, there are not so many places with listening rooms, let alone rooms with more than one of the monitors I'm after.
-------------------------------------------

Ok! Now that we've got that over and done with, I REALLY need your help! (That's a collective "your" ;) )

I have narrowed down the monitors I'm thinking of to the following:

Wharfedale Diamond Pro 8.2a
Alesis M1 Active 620 or MkII - If someone could help me out telling the difference that'd be great!
KRK RP6 - Would it be better to go for RP8??
Yamaha HS50M - Again, maybe the 8's? Maybe a sub?
M-audio BX-8

My current setup is:

M-audio Firewire 1814
Behringer BCF2000
Pro Tools M-Powered

All of this stuff has been bought in the last week or so, I have run other setups in the past, but this is the first time i'm going to use protools, and the first time i'm going to be recording more than 2 channels at once.

It will mostly be for tracking and mixing rock music, but you never know where I'll go musically, I'm already starting to move into some electronic stuff ie Drum'n'Bass and Psytrance.

So yeh... any help choosing will be REALLY... helpful! :D

You picked the wrong software, partner.

Better reconsider either your genres or your software.

And go to a retailer with all or most of your list in stock and use your ears to select your monitors rather than having some 'experts' on a BBS dictate what you're going to subject yourself to listening to.

I have the Wharfedales, and they definitely do not have enought low end for dnb in my opinion. I have these monitors, and I find them to just be OK. More likely my room is the problem. My mixes never have enough bass when I mix on the Wharfedales, so I have to overcompensate.

Monitor preferences are very personal, as you've no doubt noticed when searching past threads. Most of us like what we have, partly because we've learned to adapt and/or haven't used many other models. I'd suggest hitting the British "Sound On Sound" mag for lengthy reviews, including the pros and cons, of almost every monitor you list. You may need an "e-subscription" (cheap) to access the most recent reviews that include the Yamaha 5 and 8.

Good luck,

Im in the same boat (australian looking for monitors)

Im currently stuck as too what size woofer ill need. I think i could get away with something with a little less low end but for the sake of a couple of hundred or so, i think im going to go for the KRK RP8s. I went and had a listen somewhere and i like them. Theyre not the greatest but for the price, with a fairly good low end, i think theyre my final choice. Good luck to you though. I think generally a pair for about $950 is pretty good here.

That's from the disclaimer :D

Yeh, I am aware that tools is all wrong for that music, but I'm just starting out with it, and I already own sonar 3 studio. So I could always run both couldn't I? (Obviously not at the same time). I also have Reason 3 (Academic).

I think I'll definately get an e-subsciption to SOS... thanks for that!

So what about the 6.5 vs 8 inch debate? Is there a definitive answer, or does it vary from speaker to speaker?

@ theboy: What other monitors did you compare the KRK's to?

Please Don't Stone Me.....hi!..I'm an Aussie too!! (G'Day mate) I'm really proud of my new Behringer 2031P's I bought last week! Even after comparison in the music shop with 4 other brands, and with my own CD, they proved to be fantastic for the AU$280 bucks, ....very proud indeed! :)

My filtering specs don't let me read anything posted in boldface type.

Sometimes when you yell you obscure your meaning.

IMHO, Jeffree pretty much nailed it. It's personal and has alot to do with the environment you'll be working in. Since I treated my room, my mixes are better and I'm using the same setup as before. The big thing I noticed was simply learning my monitors. It took quite a few wasted cd's that I'd burn, play in a bunch of different systems checking for translation and then back to tweak my mix. If whatever you end up buying doesn't sound good right away, no worries. Give em a chance to break in and give yourself a chance to learn them.
imho, of course... :D

Yeh I think you guys are right... I'm leaning towards the Wharfedales with the possibility of adding a sub later to address my electronic cravings... But does it matter if you use a non matched sub?

Xander, from my limited experience--no, a matching sub isn't necessary. Many of us are successfully using subs that are different brands than our monitors. In fact, I use and recommend Wharfedale Powercube subs as good low-cost alternatives (200-300 USD). That said, if the money's handy, a matching sub would probably allow for easier integration--and maybe better sound, depending on other factors--but it's often much pricier. Either way, I found it necessary to take a lot of time to integrate my sub so that it extended the low end without dominating. But whoa, what a difference.

Hahaha, well, given that the money is definately not handy... I guess I'll take my chances! Thanks alot Jeffree! ;-)

Xander.....Hi mate....I'm using a big old Black 200watt Sherwood.....with no tone controls...Just a volume and input selector.
Hey...'ssscientist' IS A FUNNY GUY! (IMHO)..lol. (His filter won't allow hime to see this, so it's cool!).
