Hey guys and/or gals. Has anyone had experience with the newer Yamaha n12 mixer/interface? If so, did you like or dislike it? BOOSH!

Been using one for 10 months with cubase 4 and love it. Right now there are no drivers for it to integrate with cubase 5. Drivers should be released at the end of the month. If they don't release them I'll stick with C4, there's no way I'd part with my N12.

Surely they'll upadte that....I'm looking to use Cubase 5 in my new setup and have the n12 as a controller/interface. Is there anything you don't like about it and what's some of the plus' you find about the unit?

I haven't found any down sides to using it. If anything it's made my life a hell of a lot easier. The sound quality is outstanding. You'll find a very large thread over on gearstutz.com. There's ex-RME users over there that say the N12 is on par, if not better sounding sonicaly than the RME plus you get all the extra features like Yamaha's rev-x reverb and morphing comp.

Keep in mind the n12 does not have motorized faders and things like scene recall that other digital mixers have. It looks and feels like an analog mixer but is digital under the hood so to speak. There is nothing I dislike about it and the unit sounds so good. I hardly use any plugins now because the EQ, reverb, compressor all sound great. I mix with it instead of mixing in the box.

I upgraded from a firebox to the n12 and the difference in sound quality is amazing and the firebox is a brilliant bit of kit imho!, but i've never enjoyed recording and mixing music more since i got one and feel no need to ever want to change again (unless i win the lottery!!), there are of course a couple of downsides with it, like no saving of settings after a mix but i use the track sheets which you can d/l off the yamaha site so that's only now a very minor inconvienience, but overall its an awesome piece of kit for the price.

I also use the track sheets and don't mind it at all because I now enyoy mixing OTB so much with the n12.

These are incredible units for $1200. I paid $1500 when I got mine so $1200 is just amazing to me.

I consider buying the n12. I have a question about the gain of the preamps. I have low output microphones (SM 58 dynamic and SM 81 condensor). Can I use those with the n12? I ask this because the gain of the mic inputs of the firepod that I have now is far too low (even when I switch on the 12db boost).
Thanks...

You will have no problem with the gain with those mics. I use a SM81 amd SM57 all the time.

Thanks a lot. I just ordered the device, it will be delivered in a few days ...... I plan to use it with Reaper.

I've played around with it using Reaper myself but am now a full on Cubase user.

You will really like the n12.
