Or you could get a Yamaha S80 or a Yamaha "MO". Both great boards.
 
Got a S80 - still a great board IMO. Yeah, the pianos aren't as sweet as the newer samples, but I've been happily gigging with the AP plug-in card (great for live, not stellar for recording if one is finicky - I won't get into that).

I think for me it's the action. I've loved the key action since day one, and even prefer it over the graded action (as I play some organ stuff and synth/pad stuff with it).

A used S90 would be a good option too. As fraserhutch mentioned, a controller and a Motif rack would be a way to go as well.
 
Yeah, the thing I like about this is that I can find a controller that I like, and it's feel gets used on whatever synth module I use. No worries about "this synth is killer, butI hate the touch/feel". Buy the keyboard once. In fact, I've bought nothing but modules since the early 90's :D

I've been thinking about purchasing some rack modules and just using my triton for the controller. Does the motif rack perform pretty good? I love the triton to death but there is nothing like the good old yamaha piano sound. I grew up playing yamaha's so the korg was a shock to my system!!
 
I wanna use my triton le's sequencer but use the sounds from the rack for each track. I've never used a rack in my life!! Would this be possible? I like the triton but i hate how when you go in seq mode all the sounds are dry and you only get 2 master effects and 1 individual effect!!

The motif rack ES works great for me.
I also don't use the pianos in my Triton Rack.

Assuming that the Triton's sequencer can be output to the unit's midi out, should not be a problem. A caveat here though is that I have never used my Triton's sequencer so this is not be a definitive answer.
 
how about buying 88-key midi controller + sound card + PC computer? is this cheaper but with options?

It's cheaper but if you are a piano player, i don't think your going to be as happy. I'm speaking from my experience of course. Different folks are different. I had a chance to really try out the motif es6 at a local music store. I'm really thinking about taking my triton back! I love the feel of the keys for starters, and the sounds!!!!! Those sounds are unreal. When you switch to sequencer mode, the sound quality does not change, unlike the triton. But, both boards have their pros and cons.
 
motif vs s90 and other questions

Hey everyone, sorry to barge in on this discussion, but my questions fall in line with what you're all talking about. I want to get a great keyboard for recording. As much as I would like one that has good drum sounds and all those other bells and whistles, I'm mostly concerned with getting very realistic vintage sounds like Rhodes, leslie, hammond, bla bla bla... I don't really even need a great piano sound as I've got an actual one on hand. One of the guys I recorded has a yamaha s90 about 5 years ago, and the rotating speaker sound seemed very authentic to me.

Between a yamaha s90es, a motif8, or anything else you could suggest, what would get me the best sounds and which are the most user friendly? I'm a piano player from way back, but my wife is an organ player.,...do any of these offer both a weighted and a keyboard feel?

Final question, you all keep talking about modules...are those simply additional "effects" that you can install on your unit, or are they external devices that you can control with your keyboard...and if they are the latter, how expensive are they typically, and do they work with all these options?

As far as realistic sounds, never tried the s90 but i know for a fact the Motif has very realistic sounds. As far as modules, were talking about external sound bank modules that you can control with your keyboard. In my instance, i'm using a Yamaha Psr-540 as a sound module and i'm controlling it with my triton thru midi. This way i can use different sounds from both keyboards and sequence with the Triton sequencer.
 
IMO I think it is important to have a good controller that has a decent sequencer in order to trigger a rack such as a Motif. In other words don't invest in such a nice rack if your sequencer sucks.................That is my problem and the reason why I might just wait on a good deal for a Motif period!

I agree!! Before i had the Triton, I used to use the Psr-540 sequencer and it was ok but it takes forever to record when your using a floppy disk!! Everytime you do something, you have to save. When i got the Triton i was pleasantly suprised how good the keyboard sequencer was. I think from now on i'll just by sound modules also!! Or, either find really good deals on older keboards and just use em for the sounds.

Generally, controllers (in the commonly accepted sense of the term) do not have sequencers. I think you're referrring to workstations.

Off hand I cannot think of any racks that do not have the the same, if not better, sequencing capabilities of their keyboard counterparts. Certainly all mine do:

- Motif ES Rack
- Triton Rack
- Kurzweil K2500 Rack
- Kurzweil K2600 Rack


And it's a relatively easy thing to trigger sequencers via MIDI.

Since when did the Motif Rack have a sequencer?

Its got an arpeggiator - thats it.

The Triton and Motif ES Racks have sequencers that have the same, if not better, sequencing capabilities of their keyboard counterparts? Hmm.
 
recording keyboard

I guess I should add that I need a keyboard with 88-keys that my wife can also play live. I want the sound quality for recording, but it also needs to be a full keyboard.

I think I'm teetering between the motif8 and the ps90es...does anyone know whether one or the other is more reliable, and do either come with more built-in features that are necessary. I don't want to purchase one and find out that I need to spend another $300 for upgrades right away.
