My girlfriend bought me this to record drums. She bought me a set of mics as well.

I know. Keeper.

I'm trying to figure out how to use this thing. The directions are fairly straightforward, but I'm already encountering problems such as..with 2 cardiod condensers and a kick mic connected, I'm getting decent sensitivity out of the kick mic, but hardly anything form the condensers (even with phantom power). I have no idea why this is, and I'm stuck already.

Does anyone know any good Q&A sources for this mixer, or mixers in-general? Or, is this the place to be?

Thanks

Have you tried one of the condensors on the same channel as the kick that you're getting good levels from? With the same cable? With phantom power?

Whoa. Keep the girl. Undoubtedly. Damn good catch.

I wish I could find a female to buy me recording stuff!!! :(

You know those Morgantown girls... ;)

MOFO Pro...I swapped out the kick into the same XLR input, and it sounds good. I swapped one of the condensers onto the kick mic's cable, and it still sucks.

The problem has to be the condensors. But, TWO not working? They barely pick up any sound.

It's making me think my phantom power isn't working. My other mics (Nady DMK-7 kit) don't require powering, and I'll bank that the rest of them are working fine. This mixer is brand new! WTF?

Based off what you are saying, it definitely sounds like a phantom power issue. Do you know anyone who has a board with phantom power who would let you test your mics?
Not in anyway trying to sound insulting but you are using the XLR inputs for the ones that need phantom power right?

Trust me..I REALLY hope I'm doing something stupid, dude. I don't want the hassle of sending this thing back.

XLR are the 3 prong inputs that are above the regular stereo jack inputs, right? And according to my manual (and the unit's labeling), the phantom power covers all the XLR inputs from 1-12 at once. The only thing it has is the on/off switch. There's nothing else to regulate it, or make sure it's working.

That's the only inputs I'm using. If you're asking if the condensers are plugged into those, then yes..definitely.

The only other guess I've had is that there might be a fuse that needs placed (or replaced), but the shell of this thing is smooth. I don't see anywhere to access a fuse if there is one, and nothing in the book about it.

:(

Here's a stupid question..

Can I have the wrong kind of CABLE for phantom powering??

One of the guys at work has a working band, and is going to loan me a phantom powering box. I'll see if that solves this. I'm gonna try Yamaha support again now, and make sure I'm not missing anything.

Yeah sounds like your on the right track. What I was getting at in my previous post is that you need to use XLR in order to use Phantom power. So it is possible that someone could be using xlr/1/4" cables and attempting to power up condensers.
I have never seen the unit in question but I have never come across a case where the phantom power was on a separate fuse. There isn't an indicator led for the phantom power? Even the really cheap Alesis boards I had in the past had some sort of indicator to let you know that phantom power was on.
Definitely try it out with the phantom power box when you get hold of it. That should settle it one way or the other.

It has a light and it was lit.

I'm officially an idiot. I took the board to a friend's house when I went over to jam. I took the condensor, knowing he has a Roland board and I could test it out. Well, it had been a while since he'd used the board so we couldn't figure that part out. We got mine out and I showed him my problem, and he agreed with my diagnosis. Then, he says...

That mic doesn't need a AA batery or something, does it?

Holy crap.

Problem solved.

I had opened up a couple of the mics (because I take everything apart for fun), but I hadn't messed around with the condensors.

On the one hand, I'm really glad I don't have to take it back. But, I can't believe I missed that. It didn't mention it anywhere I saw on the Nady site..LOL

Oh well.

Thanks for the help!
