Hi guys,

I'm looking to replace the fan in my XR24 with hopefully a much quieter unit as I mainly record acoustic instruments in small quite rooms and the noise from the existing fan is very intrusive during quiet passages of music. I know someone who is willing to do this for me but I need some technical info on the fan size, power rating, cooling capacity etc. I would like to source a fan on the internet but don,t have the faintest idea where to start as I am relatively new to all this. Has anyone replaced an XR24 fan and could they recommend a good quality unit that I could order. Any Help much appreciated.

I replaced the fan in my HD24 with a zalman 80mm fan, combined with the zalman 'fanmate' which controls the speed of the fan. I'm assuming the XR24 has a similar internal layout.

Remove the cover:

10 screws hold the cover on, (three at the front which means you may have to remove it from a rack, if rackmounted) 4 screws secure the fan.

Essentially, you will remove the stock fan, it's attached internally with a 2 pin plug. Snip off the plug leaving a few inches. Snip off the plug on the zalman fanmate and solder the old stock fan connector. Plug the new 80mm Fan into the other end of the fanmate.

I think the 80mm comes with a combo resister/plug to reduce the RPM as well, so the fanmate might be optional.

It's been set on the lowest RPM setting for over a year now and I've had zero heat related issues.
I have also changed to the newer Seagate drives which run much cooler then previous ones.

Here's a video of someone replacing the LCD portion. Gives you an idea of the internal layout, lots of space - pretty straightforward.

Thanks Nomad. Your reply is much appreciated just what I was hoping for. The video was an unexpected bonus. Thanks also for the tip re Seagate drives. I think I will invest in a couple.
