Took awhile

It took me forever to figure that out. But eventually I realized that of my songs, the ones that people liked were the ones that I hadn't spent a lot of effort and elbow grease on.

They liked the ones that I made up for pleasure without worrying about whether folks would like it. The songs that I had sweated and slaved over never went over very well.

Rhyming

Another thing I just thought of is that it always seems to really help me if I restrict myself to making the lyrics rhyme. For some reason it forces you to get more creative and perhaps not use the same old everyday words as much.

Tanlith - I just read in the other thread that you listened to the Cow Song and now I see you've also listen to "Snowball Fights and Rock'n'Roll". So double thanks for checking out not one but two of our songs. It's always encouraging to hear good feedback.

ok well how bout this...

you ever feel lik eyou have ALREADY WRITTEN the best stuff you EVER WILL??....man i cant seem to find any more "magic"...not that anything i have done so far has really been magical but it seems lik ethe best songs (relatively)..that i have written seemed to have written themselves...i just sat around long enough to put it all on paper..ESPECIALLY since we had a baby in the last 3 mths.....all of a sudden my time is sooooo restrictled and it feels lik ei HAVE to come up with something really cool in a space of time that has been pre-determined...like say oh....i get to have from 8:00 pm on to work on my music.....man thats pressure ..i wonder if that must be the difference in people who write as a profession ...they can just sit down whenever and STILL come up with good stuff.....as opposed to poeple more lik eme who are "moment" specific........

anyway....just havin a little pity party..:(

I think the best lyrics come fast. Its kind of like you are just the vehicle and the words are flowing thru you and you're just writing them down to document the moment. Songs that i have written like that are my best work and pass my 12 month test (after a year i still don't think they suck).

The more you contrive lyrics, the more contrived they sound. When you are contriving lyrics, and you get to the point of going thru every letter in the alphebet to get a rhyme...
(example: And, Band, Comand, Dand, Eand, Fan, Grand, Hand...ect..ect)

forget it...at that point you are in the process of writing lyrics that will not hold up cause they are uninspired. I have done this myself and without fail im working on something thats just not happening at that point.

I can relate to jamal, I use to be in top level management and had very little time to write. It is CRUCIAL to be able to follow thru on an idea when the inspiration hits. Now im an idependant contractor for a health insurance company and i drive alot. I turn off the radio and kind of meditate on the open road and get alot of ideas...and if i get inspired i can just pull over to the side of the road and write down the words.

Everyone is different, but for me, I can't force a song. I will say this though, when im focused on writing a song, im more tuned in to the things going on around me and more likely to be inspired.

I have to disagree with the "going through the alphabet" thing. I like for my lyrics to rhyme. Sometimes that method of searching for the right word to rhyme leads to changing the original word you are trying to rhyme, even changing entire lines. That sometimes gives me more material to use in other lines. I do agree that sticking rhyming words in there at random just because they rhyme is definately uninspired.

that is kind of what im talking about. you have a verse, can't get it to rhyme like you want it to, and do the "alphebet" thing. Most of the time you still can't make a good rhyming verse even after that. SO, you change the verse around and do the same thing again, finally you have a rhyming verse you like. Then, when you recite the lyrics in the context of the whole song, the verse dosn't quite fit and kind of changes the theme of the song or something like that. So, then you go back to the original idea (your 1st idea is usually your best) you had for the verse and you're right back to being hung up on that one rhyme...beating your head against the wall in the same place.

what i was saying is that when you're to that point the song isn't really happening.

I have some songs that i finished that way and they don't usually flow as good as they should..and if they do flow they have a semi-corney line that was inserted just to make a rhyme without changing the whole verse around.

I have one called writers block. If you hit my www button it's in my singles. The lyrics are:

"I'm gonna write a song that's so fucking good it's gonna kill somebody"

That's all....I couldn't think of anything else to write.

Hey Jake,
Got your shades on? It gets pretty bright out here, especially coming out of the cave like that.

Or are you just lost?

Ooohh lookie who's a force of freaking nature. Looks like this is your little home here...
