in the original box...

i'd go ahead and ship it, double boxed. it will be fine.

I love to see a3440 going for sale on ebay for a great price. Why? Cause I've got a 3440 ready to sell. Keep the price high!

To use the double box method and minimize damage, the outer box would have to be at least 3" bigger on each side with appropriate cushioning / force absorbing material such as those thick styro panels that you see in home depot. Remember that it is not unusual for packages to repeatedly fall off conveyor belts from several feet up not to mention personnel handling. Just placing the original box into a larger box without anything else would do very little to protect the unit. Those things were meant to be shipped on a pallet and never sent out via the mail system in factory packaging.

Now the question is would the seller go through the trouble of packing it like above and would he do it properly ? Shipping charges would be significantly higher too so I'm not sure the seller would ship for free as per his description.

Hi All,

Nice looking package altogether; the cleanest 3340 combo I have seen in quite a while.

Shipping, yes, the big unknown...and double boxing is the only way.
I had a Studer 807 sent to me from Canada to the US. Inner box with its own insulation. About 3-inch clearance to outer box, and TONS of peanuts in between.
Now this is a machine that tips the scales at around 72 lbs all by itself, and it arrived with flying colors, even though it looked like someone had tried to run some sort of lifting device through it (parallel puncture holes on the side of the outer box.)
But double boxing works. The real pain is trying to get all the peanuts off the carpet after you have extracted the machine, but I'll take that any day...

Yup, damn forklifts! I believe it was Jeff (Ghost of FM) who said he outlined boxes with sheets of wood to prevent such occurrances.

Anyway, I don't want to be anal about it but I now truly believe that stuff like peanuts (and bubble wrap) should not be used as a major protective / cushionning material, especially for heavier items with sharp corners. If anything those thick styro sheets from Home Depot would do nicely when placed between the inner and outer boxes, at least 3" on each side. This of course in addition to the inner box packaging which would yield an extra couple of inches. The more thick the more shock absorbtion. I'd also look at foam wraps and foam corner protectors to fit snuggly around the recorder / mixer .... with perhaps peanuts to fill voids and prevent shifting.

Packaging is actually a major physics project, especially when dealing with today's shipping companies!

Btw, it's a 3440 and not 3340 .. ;)
