I intern/take "classes" at a local pro studio. The engineer brought in an SPL meter in yesterday. I know due the the Fletcher Munson effect that one should monitor around 90 db or so. But I didn't really know how quiet that is. For people starting out, I would say that you should be able to talk to another person with just a little louder than normal voice w/out shouting. I was actually really suprised.

Just an FYI.

actually, the suggested monitoring volume for music/film is 85dBSPL C-Weighted
for TV it's between 79-82dBSPL

of course there are many discussions on these numbers.

Absolutely, just making the point that my monitoring levels were way to loud. Of course referenceing at high levels once in a should not be avoided (IMO).

Can you explain the a-b-c weighted thing please? I thought that A-Weighted had something to do with relation to the human ear or something.

And another question, does anyone know where SPL meters can be obtained (cheap). In Canada RadioShack does not exist.

Yikes! If you think 90dB is quiet, you might want to make an appointment with an ear, nose and throat doc; your hearing is either being blocked or is in danger. Normal conversation should be somewhere around 60-65dB and 90dB would be about the volume of a 4-piece horn section playing a small bar about 20 feet away.

Radio Shack still exists online, even in Canada :)

Quiet being a completely relative term. I definitely do not find 90db "quiet," just quieter than I monitor at home (not much quieter mind you). I do take lots of breaks and such. The meter just gave me some perspective. And we were talking fairly comfortably (loud but not shouting) with about 6 feet between us.

And, I just had my hearing tested last month and it is pretty good. No diviation from my baseline from 5 years ago when I got it tested for my musicians earplugs.

Thanks for caring though ;)
