this is closer than i thought,
i thought it would be like 80-20 in favor of mixing

i like making up songs.
i like playing instruments.
i like mixing sounds and levels, and panning, and eq, and effects.

i dont much like trying to 'capture the magic'. this is the first time i've ever expressed that to myself. thanks for the poll.

I've got to go with tracking, especially a new tune that I'm excited about doing.

Mix. tracking is fun but painful. I guess if this poll was worded differently it would be "What do you find to be more difficult? tracking or Mixing?" I'd say tracking hands down.

Tracking

the time when i still believe its gonna sound good lol

mixing because i love reverb..but tracking is sometimes more exciting

just curious.

i think i like tracking better, but it's close.

i hope i didn't f*&$ this poll thing up

Neither. Right now both are frustrating me beyond belief!

Tracking

I like doing both pretty well, but for the past couple of years, I have been on a tracking kick. I like working with the sources and mics etc. to try and get tracks that sound knocked out all by themselves. But then, I have had the pleasure of working with some fantastic players packing great instruments lately too. :D

I voted for mixing because it's more fun for me to see what I can do with the raw tracks, but I still lean more toward a 50/50 split because I like tracking too. I love to hear it as the parts start to mesh and the song comes alive.
My only problem now is knowing when enough is enough. I got on a roll the other night and recorded 12 different guitar parts for a song. I ended up trashing 8 of them, but I had to stop myself. Then I agonized for a couple hours as to which tracks were going to go. I kept convincing myself each one was needed, but the song was mud soup...

definatly a tracker here, but i'm a very active trakcer :D i don't mind compressing and grouping tracks on the way in.. i figure this way mixing should just be a matter off setting all the faders to ten and pressing play, that's my goal anyhow

Got to be mixing.
Tracking is harder work, mixing is fun, and it's closer to achieving the whoile point of the excercise which is a listenable piece of music.

Tracking is like laying the bricks of a house, mixing is like furnishing it and making it into a home.

Aaaahhhh !

So.... is mastering like paying the home off?

No, it's more like appearing on Monster House.

Tracking is a pain when people can't play their instruments well.
