As you may have seen, I have just bought emagic's EVB3, EVD6, and EVP88 software instruments. I also have the EXS24mkII soft-sampler.
Well I have fallen absolutely in love with all of these items and the oppertunities they afford me in my studio. However, I want to use them with my band in a live setting, in both rehersals and also on stage live.
We are on a shoe-string budget! D'ya hear that? Shoe-skrang-motha`fuckin`-budget. So basically we need a laptop or desktop machine other than my really expensive studio machine that I AM NOT TAKING TO OUR PRACTICE SPACE MUCH LESS TO CLUBS ACROSS AMERICA!!!
So my guitar player's girlfriend has a four year old Gateway Pent III, 64MB-RAM laptop. She is still in college and only needs it for the Internet now and then through a PCMCIA cable modem, and for writting the ocassional paper. She has agreed to let me do whatever I need to let us be able to use it for music.
So anyways, the computer is full of all kinds of shit. There are Advert. pop ups everywhere. Spy-wear. Bullshit internet games that won't go away (complaments of her younger brother) and all the tons of bullshit a PC can get infected with over the years of uneducated use. She has big bloated programs like Outlook, Excel etc. She has like three Web-browsers installed. Just tons of shit.
So I want to start from scratch. She doesn't have anything on there that needs saving. She and I just want to wipe the damn thing clean of everything (including the Windows 98 OS) and do a complete over hall.
At the end we just want, Windows XP for an OS, 320 MB-RAM, either MS Explorer or Navigator, and MS Word. Oh... yeah... and my eMagic's Logic Audio Platinum with all the software instruments and sampler that I have mentioned.
Well I have NO IDEA how to do all that. She knows nothing about computers and neither do I. At least not about doing CPR on a nearly dead one. I have never deleted an OS before. I have never wiped out a HDD. I have certainly never installed RAM on a laptop, and I do not know what is legal and what is NOT legal with regards to software.
What I mean is... I have a DELL that has Windows XP on it, so I have the Windows XP disc that came with the Dell, but I have no idea if this OS will be able to be installed on another machine. Is the disc I have just some kind of "recovery disc" meaning... I would have to go out and BUY Windows XP AGAIN!!!! just to do this?
What I basically want to know is... where can I take this damn thing and just say to some computer wiz... "Hey man... I want this, this, this, and this"... and he do it? Here in Athens, there are not hundreds of computer stores around. We have the typical big department stores, i.e. Wal*Mart (Ha!), Best Buy, Circuit City, and all that jazz. What do you guys think I should do?
Thanks for reading this long post. And thanks for your helpful advice!
