Hello. I am new at all this recording equipment stuff. I will be asking very basic questions. Please bare with me. Question1:What is a compressor and what is a limiter? How do they differ? Thank you in advance.
L.

A compressor is basically a piece of equipment that can automatically control the volume of a signal that passes through it, it is basically used to help things to 'sit' well in a mix, for example if you have a song where the vocalist alternates between whispering and screaming you would use a compressor to make sure that the whispers could be heard above the music and the screams aren't deafening.
A limiter does the same thing as a compressor except that where a compressor generally controls levels in a gentle manner a limiter usually applies a 'dead stop' absolute limit to the maximum volume. It can be used to protect speakers from blowing or to stop signals from distorting digital recorders.

Regarding Compressor/limiters

Thank you Vox. I really appreciate such a quick response.

Question 2: Which are your favorite and top of the line compressors and limiters? Thank you to anyone who takes the time to help. Peace.

Check out a RNC!!!! You ABSOLUTELY can't go wrong with it!!

Great questions....we could spend moths going over them....I know I speak for charger when I say: "Check out the BBS search feature and the newbie forum."

learning more

Thank you Misterqcue and gargamel. You are all very kind. You know, I have so many questions, I hope I don't get on people's nerves, but hey, I want to learn. There will be more questions soon. Thank you all very much and have a great day. Peace.

Yo VOX:

You and I should write manuals for Yamaha.

:D :D :D :p
Nice explanation.

That would be great, then I could make sure that they were badly (very badly) translated into Japanese and we could finally get back at them for every nonsensical and confusing manual they ever sent us!! :D

Another question

Hello everyone. This is my question: If you could have your dream studio customed-made, what equipment would be in it?Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. Have a nice day.

Whoa, boy!

First, what's the difference between a compressor and a limiter, and now what would we stock a custom-built studio with?

Look, it's not the best sort of question to ask. In the first place, you'll get a different answer from each person who responds. Secondly, even if you were in a position to get your hands on all that dream gear, would you know how to use it anyway?

Start with small steps...

Anyway, my answer: I'd stock it with a beer cooler, and stock the cooler with beer.

Custom Studio

Thanks for the reply Dobro. I agree with you that it is quite a large and vast question but I'm not looking for one answer. That was the whole point, to get variant answers that I can then investigate on. Secondly, it is true that I would need to learn all the gear but that's where I'm at. I am indeed getting the opportunity to record in this dream studio and I need to get prepared. I am aware that this is accomplished over many years of training, but I'm starting now, from where I'm at. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do first besides drink beer? LOL :- )
Perhaps you know of classes I can take or someone that I can pay to tutor me. I learn these kinds of things fairly quickly and I have a good ear for sound. Thanks and have a nice day amigo.

research!

Lucien:

you gotta do your research dude! , there are HUNDREDS of articles on the web, that talk about compressors, limiters, samplers, synths, software, hardware...
There are very good magazines also, electronic musician, keyboard, mix, eq, etc, etc!

My recommendation would be, get familiar with the recording process, BUY A BOOK, and then start researching about what to buy, once you know and understand what you need.

All your questions were already asked, at least 99% of them, it's just a matter of research.

cheers
