Yeah that eats my chocolate starfish.

I always thought the solo in BTO's "Takin' Care of Business" was a a bad take they forgot to replace.

As much as I love the man, and 99% of his songs, Neal Young has some god aweful solos.

I thought he was a “one note genius.”

And once again someone said Vai and Satch play with no emotion. I’ve got a quick observation: how many times do you hear professional vocal coach or vocalist say people like Luciano Pavarotti, Celine Dion, Mariah Carry and Stevie Nicks don’t sing with enough emotion? Is Kurt Cobain really sharing his pain or is he struggling to hit the notes because he took too many tranqs and smoked 3 packs of reds before he went in to sing?

Maybe it isn’t your cup of tea. Shoot I’m not about to pay 2 bills to see Celine do her Vegas shtick but I’m not going to say because she’s technically proficient that she doesn’t sing with emotion. Anyone who sat through the closing credits of Titanic can tell you she has plenty of emotion. (though there should have been a court order against her doing AC/DC) Vai and Satch may not be your cup of tea but I challenge anyone to really sit and listen to “For the Love of God” or “New Rays from an Old Sun” and say it lacks emotion.

If you’re a true minimalist then I can respect your argument. A true minimalist knows how to play but won’t use an Ace with a 2 will do. Pseudo minimalists are the ones who tried but can’t play the fancy stuff so they crack on it. I tend to enjoy all kinds of music so I can’t see any validation of the “doesn’t have emotion” card. Unless your going to the CC Deville, Vinney Vicent wanking fast for the sake of showing off. The only emotion there is "come on guys, I can play!!!"

I watched this, and it made me realize....I am NOT the worst lead player on this planet.... :D

I wouldn't say Vai never played with emotion. He recorded a fair amount of good stuff (I even like "Yankee Rose" ) , but overall his career didn't have material that was up to the caliber of his playing. Satriani . . . the dude just needed to join a band, I guess. Even that one hit he had on the radio was just boring. Compare his instrumental records with say Allan Holdsworth, who is perhaps the greatest technical AND expressive genius of the electric guitar.

But people like singers and lyrics, it's just a fact of life.

I'm not a big Cobain fan, but he gets some awesome guitar tones and painted some great sonic textures. The guitar tone on "Come as you are" is cool as hell. I really like his solo on "In Bloom" and "Heart Shaped Box". Would you rather listen to those solos, or some totally cheesed out velveta guitar solo like Joe Satriani's on "The Extremist"? I'd take Cobain's any time.

Again, Satriani is a great guitarist, and I remember 15 or so years ago watching him play live solo on MTV and being blown away while he was dropping Wes Montgomery and Hendrix tones. Unfortunately, I have yet to hear any of his albums where he puts that taste into it. I think Satch needs to get into a project with a musician (preferably not a guitar player) who HE is intimadated by.

I think people like Peter Gabriel, Bernie Worrell, Lee Scratch Perry, Bill Laswell, or Ted Macero could bring out a side of Satch I could stand listening to...

I knew there was something I liked about you, ms. I've seen Holdsworth play live 3 times (once at the old 9:30 Club!!!)

What, the birthday wasn't enough :p

I wish I'd seen Holdsworth. I've seen Larry Carlton and John McLaughlin though.

Thank you!! I was going to mention that but figured I'd get lynched. I was listening to Southern Man on the radio today and it reminded me of a guy I used to jam with. Once in awhile he would get into a solo like that and the rest of us would have to stop and tell him to shut the fuck up!

You know, I don't get it. Classical went atonal in 1920, jazz in 1950 (dates approximate), here we are 50 or 60 years later and rock musicians just can't handle it. Maybe Vernon's solo was so perfect that nobody else dares try anything atonal.

Except Jesse Michael Garcia :D

I think the thing with Vernon is the setting, his playing is adventurious but the setting [or in the case of Living Colour] is traditional. Probably most people would like to hear something more conventional.

I like Vernon's playing, also dig the idea to do "less traditional stuff" in an otherwise regular Rock-context.

Vernon did an album with Bill Frizell in the early 90s, the setting on that album is all geared up for his playing, but after 5 songs you may feel it gets too much, especially with "two freaks" going all over the shop.............however I personally all dig it!!

slash is technically quite good, the guy can shred more than most people would believe, and he still writes really good hard rock.

But he doesn't these days eh? I know he can play, melodically and harmonically but I do not hear it these days. What I liked about early Guns was the feel, the guttsy kind of approach and attitude, some of Slash's riffs there were fun,.................

Okay live may be another thing, but on record I have not heard any of the energy of his early days!!

You don't like Velvet Revolver? Even a little? At all

I am always a bit disappointed when I hear the solo from The Doors Light My Fire.

I have a version of it which is called: "Bite my Wire", listening to that one makes all the difference, and yes, you would love the solo on that one as it is full of energy and danger.

Here listen to this Satriani album, it is just called Joe Satriani and is from 1996 and it does have him playing in a band. It is his most organic album, solos where the phrasing and tone are more important than the technique. Okay he did this after he had shown the world what he could do technically, so.......................

I agree on what you mentioned about his playing and band etc. etc. ...........well doesn't really matter at all eh? The remark you made is heard so often, and I think that a lot of people do not really know this album here, so give it a try............

Pure emotion that one, it does what the song asks for. First Class Americana from a time noone ever heard of that phrase.

Speaking of worst solo ever, check this out.

Yes it is from a real song.
No, not from me.

Promise to never do that to me again. :p

I have no nominees. Guess I have good enough taste in music I rarely hear anything even remotely horrible enough to qualify for this thread... :D

And yes, Vernon Reid can play - but he's very overrated. Probably because he's black and playing in a rock band, and black is cool, right? BTW, I'm a Living Colour fan so I say that with a sense of objectivity. They milked the whole "Look at me, we're black folk playing white people genre music". Aside from Hendrix there haven't been many popular black rock artists. Guess african americans have higher standards, rap and hip hop. lol [That's a joke of course, look at Jazz]
