The best thing about a guitar is that it's not a saxophone and the best thing about rock is that it's not jazz.
Uh...what? Or is it that the worst thing about a guitar is that it's not a saxophone? Great tone and playing tanscends the instrument that creates it. A sax can create the sound that Jimi Hendrix was searching for in his walls of feedback, without even needing an amp to do it. Miles Davis trumpet through a wah pedal rocked alot harder than many guitarists of his day. I think today's rockers need some jazz in their system. Charles Mingus is sure a lot more Rock & Roll than Papa Roach is. Joshua Redman rocks harder than the Stones recent albums. The roots of Rock and Jazz in the early blues seems to be more and more lacking in contemporary rock.

Oh yeah, and Coltrane rocks harder than John Mayer.

That is my all time FAVORITE guitar solo. If that solo was played note for note on the saxophone, I think the brilliance of it would make alot more sense to people, especially bop and free jazz worshipers. I've gotten into near fist-fights with people over this solo, and whether it is horrible or genius. I've actually won people over by making them listen to it while cosidering it being played note for note on a sax. I think it totally goes over the head of alot of people who don't have jazz backgrounds, and they just assume it is someone with no idea or thought to it.

GOD!! I was trying to stay out of this one, but I MUST add my .02. While some parts of the Cult of Personality may be arguably genius or horrible, huge chunks of that solo are absolute inarticulate, blurry, overly-distorted crap! I see other threads talk about wanking solos, but at least many of those leads are actually made up of musical notes. the CoP solo has parts where no sane person could possibly make out what notes Vernon is playing....I'd bet even Vernon doesn't know for sure. That is not genius. It is wanking of the worse kind. Music is made of notes, not just sound effects.

Please don't take this to mean that I don't like Vernon. I think that album rocks! Just not the CoP solo. I think Vernon shines on stuff like Funny Vibe.

I also immediately thought of CC DeVille when I saw this topic. Can he just be declared the winner?

Not if Jack White has anything to say about it.

slash is technically quite good, the guy can shred more than most people would believe, and he still writes really good hard rock.

I have this video of fred durst attempting to play a lead, or solo, or something. It was a live thing and he had just finished playing a cover of Nirvana's Nevermind, which was alright. Then he does some weird riffing in drop-d, attempts to do a bend, failing miserably, does more riffage which is incomprehensable, tries another bend, and then figures out that he sucks and then says "shag my friends tonight". It hurt my ears. I can't find the site that I found it at, but if someone knows, please post.

John Mayer rocks!?!?!?!?!

No he doesn't rock. But think about that when you see his album in the Rock section of the CD store and think about how much less he rocks than a million jazz players over there in the Jazz section. And I'm not saying ROCKS as in I think it's cool, I'm talking ROCK in the driving over a cliff screaming like Little Richard sense.

Worst solo ever?
Eric Clapton on "Do What You Like" from the LP "Blind Faith." One listen and you will understand why Clapton felt like the project and band were a part of his life he'd like to forget ever happened.

I am always a bit disappointed when I hear the solo from The Doors Light My Fire.

I think John Frusciante's solo on "Californication" is mighty wack. Especially if you listen to it after his solo on "If you have to ask", which I think is his highest hour.

Sorry, jazz dudes. I appreciate technical skill. I appreciate Sun Ra. I appreciate John Coltrane.

Vernon Reid is no John Coltrane. As for the solo in Cult of Personality, I think it is a horrible example of lead playing and worst of all, it dosen't seem to serve any purpose whatsoever. It dosen't take you from A to B, it just wanks along over a verse and a chorus. Filler. How revolutionary. /drinks bleach/

What the hell, though - somebody's got to buy this crap I guess.

I have to concur... instead of reaching for his blues roots Reid seems influenced by Vinny Vincent's "look at me I can play fast too" style that cursed the 80's.

What is your problem

Teen spirit,
Anyone who objects please dont be a half hearted follower of Kurt.

follow his example and eat a bullet.
Its the only real way you can honour him.

What is with the rutheless thrashing of Nirvana? What makes you an authority on soloing? Post an MP3 of your work and I will be the judge.

In all reality the "best solo", "worst solo" thing is so subjective to your own personal opinion it's not even worth the effort. To me a solo by Jimmy Page or SRV has tons of emotion, where as a Steve Via / Satriani solo has tons of technical prowise, but no emotion.

Others may disagree and say Page is sloppy, that's fine. I like it. In any event Cobain was not known for his soloing abilities.
