The PRS Dragon is my #1 choice.
$20,000 for a guitar made on a machine. Gimme a break.

It seems like most production guitars with a big brand name are over-priced, especially Gibson LP's. I brought mine to a guitarsmith for intonation problems. He showed me some defects that I wish I never knew about:

1. Uneven and excessive string height at the nut. I'm not talking about the difference between smallest unwound and thickest wound strings (there clearly needs to be some difference there), but gross discrepancies between adjacent string height at the nut - enough to cause my intonation problems. How long does it take the assembler to get this right, a few extra minutes of filing?

2. Uneven fret height, causing all sorts of buzz with only mediocre action.

3. Uncrowned or undressed frets right off the production line. They weren't glued in either; some were loose, which was only apparent when lightly tapped.

4.The fret positioning wasn't great either, but was barely acceptable for my needs.

In the future, any new production line guitar I buy will immediately be brought to a luthier I trust.

pchorman,
That blows, about the Les Paul. I had one about fifteen years ago, a '69 Custom. Not a bad guitar as I recall. A few years ago I was looking for something to complement my Strat and looked at tons of LP's and PRS's. Many were very good, but all were quite a bit more than I wanted to spend. I was ready to suck it up and live off Ramen noodles for a while and then I discovered my Hamer FM Special. Now if Hamer can make a guitar this good (in my estimation) for this kind of stupidly low price (yes its American made), then what the f**k are Gibson asking us to pay for? Must just be the prestige of the name. Now while I didn't exactly wear Toughskins to high school, I don't mind being seen playing out wearing the Hamer. But then I've played out with a Fernandes Nomad, so what the hell do I know.

peace.

Any new Gibson, Fender, and Washburns... Gibson and Fenders are too expensive.... Washburn's just suck!

Strats may be functional for what some people do but not for what I do.

That said, over a grand for a guitar that cannot take what I dish out is a disgrace.

One of the prettiest and most striking guitars I ever owned and the least versatile and hardest to sell after I realized that I didn't need it was my ,,,, sigh Gretch White Falcon .I wish I still had it just to hang it on the wall .

Anything by Gibson, sad to say.Didn't used to be the case,I bought several new Les Pauls and 335's at Manny's in NYC for between $500-600 back in the day.Even Fenders are too much these days, and the Korean stuff just keeps gettin' better every year.I played on a Korean Hamer 335 clone with Duncan Designed PU's the other night that was more than decent for $399.

Gibsons are the most overpriced has-been guitars on the market today, acoustics included.

PRS's are also getting out of hand, but at least they are well made. (Though not as well-made as the pre '95's)

The last 5 guitars I have purchased were all used and over 10 years old. I think I would have a hard time buying anything new anymore.

Gibson quit makin quality instruments when they left Kalamazoo! You want a late model gibson? Buy a Heritage.
I have a '82 LP I wouldn't sell unless I was starving.
I just bought a 2000 American Tele that I can't put down.
Fender finally decided to make the Americans better than the Mexicans. The maple fretboard on this thing is awesome.
I can't complain with my Mexican PBass Special. It makes my old bass sound like a toy. My Japanese Strat? Oh well, it's noisy as hell. I raised the strings real high and use it to practice slide . . . about all it's good for.

Have to agree about the Gibson vs Heritage thing, right on.
I also would say anything made by fender since Leo left.
If you want a real Fender that plays better and sounds better and costs the same as a "Fender Brand" just save everyone some trouble and get a handmade G&L
MIKE

Also those rainsong guitars are way expensive, but I have never played one, so I can't be sure they are overpriced

Gibson Guitars

Yes....Gibson guitars are somewhat over priced, but so are Corvettes......Gibson went through some bad years in quality control and I wouldn't have a Gibson made in certain years for any money....But, back in 1996 I went to Elderly Music in E. Lansing,Mi. and with the intent of spending up around 1200.00 fo a new Nighthawk , I found a used 1994 model that I purchased for 600.00.....I dare all the "I'll buy anything but a Gibson" mentalities to even come close to a guitar that is as versatile and sounds as good as my Nighthawk for that kind of $$$$$.....Try one out......but don't bother with the two pick-up model (it defeats the whole purpose)........See ya backstage................

Perhaps others here will agree when I say that what a lot of us are expressing is not disdain for Gibson but a certain chagrin at the sad state of affairs now compared to what was and could perhaps again be a truly magical name among musical instrument brands. There are many Gibsons out there that are truly wonderful instruments for which the original owners paid a reasonable price,it's a shame to see what has happened in most of their current production.
