It seems like most production guitars with a big brand name are over-priced, especially Gibson LP's. I brought mine to a guitarsmith for intonation problems. He showed me some defects that I wish I never knew about:
1. Uneven and excessive string height at the nut. I'm not talking about the difference between smallest unwound and thickest wound strings (there clearly needs to be some difference there), but gross discrepancies between adjacent string height at the nut - enough to cause my intonation problems. How long does it take the assembler to get this right, a few extra minutes of filing?
2. Uneven fret height, causing all sorts of buzz with only mediocre action.
3. Uncrowned or undressed frets right off the production line. They weren't glued in either; some were loose, which was only apparent when lightly tapped.
4.The fret positioning wasn't great either, but was barely acceptable for my needs.
In the future, any new production line guitar I buy will immediately be brought to a luthier I trust.
