Gotcha.
I really like the energy of the performances. I like the song too. Reminds me of Squeeze.
The vocal sound is cool. I liked that.
One thing that struck me was that the mix was very narrow. Most everything was down the center. Maybe that's what you want.
Vocals are pitchy in spots. I think minor pitch correction could fix that.
The cymbals have a hissy/swirly sound. I love the snare sound.
The riff/lead-ish guitar is a bit thin and mid-rangey. Maybe a notch cut in the mid-2Ks. It's be nice if the mix had a double tracked guitar to widen the spread.
The low end level sounds pretty good. It's little lite - but I like it that way. I think a mix like this is better with a lite low end.
Thank you very much for the thoughts. I think the criticisms are bang on the money and the praise is gratefully received.
I'm a big fan of Squeeze amongst many others, but don't think this song sounds like them, although
I might, being British. I definitely stole a part from their Hourglass near the end of the song, though!
Vocals are not my strong point, and I'm too lazy to fix little bits here and there. I just try to cover them with double tracks.
With panning, I don't go beyond 10 and 2, it feels jarring, but maybe I'll experiment with some other mixes. I usually end up with 4 guitar parts, not including the bass. Acoustic, chuggy two string rhythm, twinkly arpeggios, and a solo. Before I know it, things seem to always get crowded and parts don't always stand out. Is that a common issue?
These were only ever thought of as demos, but with digital recording what it is today maybe I should set my aim a bit higher. Back in the day I used to demo songs on a 4 track cassette Tascam Porta07, a japanese Telecaster, Boss ME-8, and a borrowed drum machine. Just moved to the BR-800 after a little tinkering on a Boss Micro BR a couple of years ago, and am loving the extra room and freedom.
Thanks again TripleM.
