actually its not a garage band, but a basement band. At first, we were using a crappy kareoke machine with the microphone dangling from the ceiling to record our music. but, metal doesnt really come in to clear through something like that, neither does any kind of music for that matter. But then i had a better idea, i took my digital video camera that has a zoom mic, and placed it in the center of all our amps. this is how we have been recording our sessions. i would then take the film, and run it through final cut pro...which is a video editing program, strip away the video, and i was left with digital audio i could edit. as you can guess, we are all on a budget and recording systems are not readily available to us.
is this the best way to go about making our cd without spending money? or is there a better way.

well with your technique, its nearly impossible to achieve quality sound, but the best you can go for is sound thats clear. by clear i mean u can hear what the guitars are playing and etc, not just muck. u can try to save up money for a stereo (ribbon) mic, and put it in the center, because one of those records sounds evenly from all directions. with a regular mic ie. dynamic shure sm58 etc, the sound will be uneven. but nevertheless, take the time to adjust the amp settings, and record. then become rockstars and build ur own studio for 2 million dollars! its that easy

welcome to the board!!! :)

"Best" is subjectical word. You know what I mean... Technicaly, it's far from the best, but cost wise, it could be the best for now for you. Before you make any CD, you better set your goal. If you think you'll sell the final result (as CD off course), then you need to consider to work in better way (eg. rent studio, etc.). For making demo CD, all is fine. Give a little time to learn how to gain the best from your gears, and maybe you'll change your mind.
