Workhorse LDC

I am coming up on buying a Digi002, monitors (another thread maybe), and some LDC's.

It would be qwyght good if these LDC's could do many things pretty well but also need to be on a budget. I already have an SM57 and Okctava MK012, and I want to record a Martin D-15, an Epiphone LP Standard into a 60 watt Vox Valvetronix, an upright piano, and my grandmothers church organ or something (Conn?). Down the road I will want to use these as vocal mics and overheads for drums. I have searched all over the web and have read a lot on these forums, but I have no idea which way to go. I think I want to buy two of the same mic (mabes one now and one later, or maybe BOTH AT THE SAME TIME) to have a nice stereo pair. The range is probs $200-300 (400 TOPS) if getting two, and probs $600 for one. I have saved a BITCH LOAD for this, so I want it to be good.

The ones I've looked at are (please comment if you have experience w/ these mics, but also give other suggestions in addition to the ones listed if you can):

•AKG C2000b, C3000b
•Audio Technica AT3035, AT4033, AT4040, and co.
•CAD M179
•M-Audio Luna, Solaris
•R0DE NT1-A, NT1000
•Shure KSM27
•Mabes a StudioProject

How easy is it to just go into a store and perform mic audtioning tasks?

As far as an all-purpose workhorse type mic . . .

of the ones you listed, I'd say the Audio Technica 4040 might be a strong choice. The CAD M-179 isn't bad if you're on a tight budget.

If I were looking for a multi-purpose under $1,000 then I would say the Shure KSM-44 or the Audio Technica 4050 would be my first choices. They're both well-known for being pretty damn good on a lot of different things. And you'll probably find at least something that they exell at.
 
I'll second the Shure KSM44 as a good multi-purpose mic under $1000.
 
For the $600 limit, you could get a 4033 (pretty colored and thus not all-purpose) or a RODE NT1000 (very sensitive & neutral sounding). For $350 you can get an NT1000 with a shockmount. I am getting very good results with mine and I plan to get another.

Would it be better to go with one AT4050, KSM44, or C 414 or two AT4040s, NT1000s, or M179s? If I were to go with the 4050, 44, or 414, would it be worth it to save up and buy another? For one more possibility; is the KSM32 a good use of $500 for these purposes?
 
I think the CAD VSM is worthy of consideration for a nice go to mic, very natural tube condensor that works well on many sources.

If you're going to go for a pair on the cheaper side, those M179's are choice and offer versatility and good price.

The Shure KSM32 is another good choice at $500. I need to use mine on more things.

AT3035 isn't quite as nice on sparkly instruments in my opinion, but excels at amp mic'ing and many vocal duties.
