Olah!

I was just wondering if anyone would like to share a few thoughts with me . . .

Very soon, I would like to purchase a new effects unit. This is probably a silly question but here goes: My musical taste is pretty dated, I guess -- I love pshchadelia and a little prog-rock -- Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis . . . and of the newer stuff I can really get in to Radio Head. I'm sure you're seeing a pattern here. Think headphone music, probably fun for some people to listen to on recreational drugs. :) Not that I encourage or condone that sort of thing.

Does anyone have any favorite effects units that allow you to dial up some really way-out there sounds? Anything ranging from the bizarre to the surreal is perfectly acceptable. Currently, I have a few phasers I like . . . and believe it or not, I have even found some help with my Wave's plugin package in the form of the "Waves' Enigma." And I love Timeworks phaser plug, too.

So I'm looking for anything . . . outboard effects in particular, but plugins are useful to.

this effect would never be used by softer bands like pink floyd, and I'm pretty sure radiohead would never even want to touch it... hell, it's so far out there I can't even find something to constructively use it on, but.........
gotta go with the dod buzz box. this thing is INSANE!!!!!

delay wise, the boss dd5 digital delay is a Godsend for long-winded trippy passages..... another cool effect is to have an envelope filter feeding a delay, and then alternate between strumming a chord slow and soft to fast and hard. for a semi-example, think of the distorted guitar that leads into the chorus of "lucky". live, the envelope filter-delay thing is how they do it.
digital delays are really the only way to go for those extreme radiohead delay sounds.... like the end of karma police.... that's just ed's rack delay unit feeding back into itself.
 
Digital delays are good. I especially like having the option to set the delay's tempo different for each L / R channel.

I remember this old unit I used once that had almost a "reverse delay" effect. Made it sound like the words were being sucked back in to your mouth, for lack of a better way to describe it. Interesting to say the least.
 
Yeah.... if you record on a daw or whatever, just reverse your vocals.... then reverb it or whatever... then reverse it again.

that's basically the trick they use during the verses of "everything in its right place", that one real glossy harmony that just seems to be gliding along, never actually saying anything.....

sorry.... I tend to just keep on going once I start talking about radiohead..... bad habit...
 
so, are there any other effects you've currently been looking at?
 
I'd like to get a hold of some good guitar effects, as well.

I think I was spoiled by all the cool options I had on the COSM amp-modeler I used to have on the multi-track recorder. I basically ditched that, though, in favor of direct micing . . . it just sounds better. But I miss the effects! I'd like to have some of those back :( but still be able to get the nice sound you get with direct micing, ya know?
 
What about a filter bank

How about the Sherman Filter Bank or, if you can find one, the Electrix EQ Killer or whatever that hting is called (I think it is discontinued but there are probably cheap ones around) I think that I read somewhere that these devices can be used for some pretty unusual effects.
 
I haven't heard them but I know Danelectro released some psychedelic pedals a little while ago -psychoflange, sitar, and I think a chorus or something -they look pretty cool and trippy.
 
Chessrock - I have 2 units that definitely fit the Floyd/Yes/Genesis psychadelic style, both from Lexicon. The first is dirt cheap (& unfortunately discontinued) - the Vortex. The second is not so cheap, but very powerful and sounds great - PCM 81. Sometimes the Vortex units show up when stores are blowing out old stock, otherwise keep your eyes on the used market.

Digitech is usually pretty good for weird stuff. I had a GSP21 years ago and it was great for fake sitar, multi tap echoes, reverse reverb and all that fun stuff.

The Edge uses a lot TC Electronics for his delays and weird stuff.
 
Ooh yea, sitar is good. It's tough to get a good canned sitar, though. It almost has to sound more like a good effect as opposed to actually trying to soundi like a sitar. Otherwise you're treading in to the CHEESE factor - kind of like early keyboards that tried to imitate string sections and we look back on them now and say "what were we thinking?! ! " :)
 
oh the sitar wasnt fooling anybody. It was definately an effect. I think it was some harmonizing, delay and reverse verb. It was pretty cool though.

If you really like trippy stuff then make sure you get a good foot controller with a couple of volume pedals. Being able to do volume swells and control reverb/delay/flanger depth with a pedal can add a lot to a performance.
 
The line 6 delay modeler will do all of the cool delay sounds you could ever hope for. It actually does the analog delay "twist the knob and hear the delay go all wacky" thing better than my Boss DM-2, a bona fide analog pedal. Goddammit! I wish Line6 would stop coming out with cool toys! I just don't have the money for these things!
