I had a good day at the hardware store today. I was at one of the local Rockler Hardware stores today, looking for some router bits which do not exist (to make the installation of Highlanders and the new DTAR acoustic pickups easier). When I had struck out on the bits, I went (as I always do) down to the hardwood lumber room to see if anything inspired me (yes, this is how professional woodworkers think. Wood inspires me).
Right inside the door, I found two pieces of highly figured maple. One of the (a piece of curly maple) is thick enough for me to get two electric guitar tops out of, and the other (flame maple) is big enough for one top. I spent an average of $40 a top on this stuff, which is of a quality that I would normally pay $135 (for the flame maple) to almost $300 (for the curly maple) for. It needs a little more work to turn it into a top, and it needs to sit in the shop for a year before I can use it, but that is just fine with me.
On top of that, they decided to start giving us a 10% discount on all of our future purchases in that store. Add the whole tax exempt thing (we collect the taxes when we sell stuff, so we don't have to pay taxes when we buy it), it is good to be a professional woodworker.
