No temptation...I already have two of the best halftracks ever...3M M-64, and Tascam BR-20T.

That's a piece of Ampex history right there though.

Cool, wonder if the new owner will get it running again or if it becomes a static display.

Cool museum piece. :)

Hey.....the last Otari MX5050 BIII ain't no slouch either....;)...and still available as NOS!

Otari, Inc.: Product Information: MX-5050BIII 2ch Analog Audio Tape Recorder

I would give mine up unless maybe I came across a killer 1/2" 2-track....but then, 1/4" 2-track was/is the standard mixdown deck.

Got some info from a related thread on the Ampex List...that model 200 is a Frankenpex. Looks like it was put together from spares...the headblock is not 200/201/201A but likely 300, the transport control buttons are not 200...looks like some parts were custom made but to look like 200 vintage, etc.

I know next to nothing about the 200 series, but I do know who ever took those pics of the electronics definitely knew what they were doing photographically! Rare to see on ebay! :)

Cheers! :)

Im not so sure its a cludge, but Ive been wrong before. The head block appears to be the same as many 200a in photos, including the one on the museum of magnetic recording website. If I understand correctly what makes an "A" is that the old head block the was set up in front of the tape (oxide side towards operator) is replaced with the one you see in the pictures for the now standard, oxide away from the operator. The electronics and cabinet are all 200. As to the controls they look prototype (like very early 200?) with indicators for function that didnt return to Ampex machines for a while. With the exception of the extra pinch rollers right next to the head block all the top pieces look correct, although it is missing the little cover for the capstan shaft.

Cant tell for sure using just pictures, but I think that is probable one of the very first 200s if not the first.

I want to see it. I need another project like a hole in the head, but.....

Well, I'm not an expert on the model 200 myself...but I place a lot of stock in the folks on the Ampex List since it's populated with people that have first-hand experience with a great many things.
