This is a song that I wrote from December last year. I have to admit that after ten months, I still really like it! lol

BUT I also have to admit that my voice has gotten better with some training since then and recognize that the voice work could be improved (both lead and backing). Thus I'd like to redo the song a bit and make is as good as I can. Since I'm going to redo this, I would REALLY love to get your recommendations on the mix / arrangement so that I could get the best out of this that I can.

Thanks!

jeffoest,

That's a real snappy tune there and very impressive piano/keyboard skills to boot!

Mix wise, everything seems fairly balanced but there is a fairly dry tone to the sound over all. Perhaps some verb on the mix to make the sound a little less clinical soundings as it does right now.

The top end of the mix as well seems a tad bright for my ears and I don't really hear much over 14khz anymore, (thank playing in a band for that!).

As you are going to re-do the vocals, I see no need to rip away at those though, your harmony and doubling work sounds very solid with no detectable sour notes. Good show, there!

I found the horn patch sounding very electronic and out of place in the mix. Maybe think of a different sound for the stabs....perhaps a clear jazz guitar with a bit of wah on it? Not sure there.

The tempo seems to be a bit fast in the intro and through-out the piece, almost as if you are wanting to rush through the song to get it over with.

Real drums would be an obvious help and improvement on the electronic ones you have there. They make the song sound cheap and that is a shame considering the level of talent you have in playing, writing and arranging.

Very impressive stuff!

Welcome to the clinic!

Cheers! :)

Wow, Jeff

this is one of the best tunes I've heard here lately. This is really great!! I'm currently working on a piano driven song, too and I have to say I'm impressed!

I really dig the upbeat feel to this, but the drum beats are so so until the end of the song, where it gets jazzier. I'm no drummer, but maybe you can create an upbeat loop without losing that jazz feel(?) Anyway, this is really cool, man.

I think your vocal sounds fine, but there is always room for improvement, can't wait to hear what you can do with the training. From this one, I would say compress the vocal a bit cuz you don't sound %100 comfortable taking breath and etc, and the volume kind jumps in and out on some spots. But, compression might not even be needed after the training.

Looking forward to hear the new version. Great job!

Man this kicks!

Great playing, well recorded. Maybe a little dry, but I still like it. The first time the B3 kicks in--awesome. You have really put together a great piece!

Nice piano playing. Really moves. Good harmonies, really tight.

Not sure how the piano was tracked, but it has a bit of thin sound. Seems to be missing some low mids.

The volume really jumps up after the intro. Kind of a long piano transition after the first two lines. Boy the volume really jumps at 1:45. The volume really drops for the piano solo at 3:23.

The cymbals seem a little over-hyped, especially on the right side. I didn't care for the trumpets in the middle.

It sound like the word "bills" gets cut at 2:51. Since you're retracking the vox, it's not such a deal. But be careful.

Guys - thanks a lot for you comments and suggestions - TRULY terrific feedback and I modestly thank you for the kudos.

You have given me some really really useful things to go back and look at - AWESOME!!

You'll laugh but I actually don't mind the horn sound in the middle, BUT everyone who has listened to it says it sounds cheesy. It bugs me because I believe everyone and am sure that it is a cheesy sounding voice - I just wish I heard cheesy in it.... LOL Anyways - I'll try some new voicing or maybe get rid of the horn backing completely.

Many thanks again for listening and giving me your thoughts!!

Jeff
