picked up a Wollensak cassette recorder.
My "studio" is powered by a tricked out Mac Pro, an Apogee Ensemble and Neumann U87. Now I'll confess that I was secretly expecting some warm low-fi analog magic but instead all I got was a lot of tape hiss.
I guess cassette tapes are not for professional use after all.

A wollensack? You couldn't get much more lo fi than a Wollensack. :D

the U87 sounds nice though.

I have a wollensack I got free. It's a tube one and it's like brand new and it's a mono both ways reel to reel. It's cool but it doesn't sound so great. It sounds OK. Try looking for an actually multi track cassette recorder, like tascam. Check craigs list. They don't cost much and I'm sure you'll be a lot happier with it.

Just wondering: How did you get a U87 but only could afford a $25 cassette recorder?

i do have an apogee ensemble i record with ($3000)
thought Wollensack was high end tape recorder - didn't do enough research..
I do like to work in a low-fi sound in the mix - not everything is about the money. But cassette tapes are pretty useless imho.
